The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Solutions Architect – Virtual Cloud Platform as part of the Virtualization & Embedded Software Development Tools (VEST) team in VSEE. Our mission is to develop tools, platforms, and virtual automation capabilities that accelerate infrastructure and application software development, enable co-simulation in cloud-based virtualization environments, and support automated validation workflows within a larger CI/CD framework.
As a Level 8 Solution Architect, you will serve as the primary technical owner for the architecture and design of GM’s industry-leading SOLE virtualization platform. You will define and evolve platform architecture, ensure alignment to enterprise standards, and drive non-functional requirements such as scalability, resiliency, cybersecurity, and cost efficiency. You will also provide execution leadership and technical oversight for implementation teams, staying hands-on with prototyping, critical-path development, and deep technical reviews.
This is an individual contributor role with heavy technical leadership and influence, but no direct people management responsibilities.
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):
- Own and evolve the end-to-end architecture for the SOLE virtualization platform, balancing functional requirements for embedded software development with operational requirements such as cloud scalability, cybersecurity, resiliency, availability, and cost optimization.
- Define and maintain target-state architecture, reference architectures, and architectural roadmaps for SOLE, including multi-region deployment, disaster recovery, and high-availability strategies.
- Lead architecture and design for new SOLE capabilities, services, and integrations, including event-driven and asynchronous workflows that support large-scale simulation and validation workloads.
- Partner with product management, engineering leads, and stakeholders across VIP, SDV, and other programs to translate business and engineering needs into clear architectural patterns, epics, and technical requirements.
- Serve as the primary architecture point of contact and subject matter expert for SOLE, representing the platform in cross-functional forums, design reviews, and enterprise architecture discussions.
- Provide technical oversight, guidance, and design review for implementation teams delivering SOLE capabilities and integrations, ensuring alignment to architecture, security, and quality standards.
- Stay hands-on by:
- Designing and implementing reference implementations, POCs, and critical-path platform components.
- Contributing code and automation for SOLE services, infrastructure-as-code, pipelines, and co-simulation workflows.
- Performing deep technical debugging and performance tuning across microservices, infrastructure, and data paths.
- Define and enforce architecture and design governance for SOLE, including patterns, guardrails, and decision records (ADR-style) that improve consistency and long-term maintainability.
- Lead and partner with cross-functional teams to define and document requirements for cloud applications, virtualization platforms, and automation capabilities that integrate with SOLE.
- Collaborate with suppliers, simulation integration teams, and internal process partners to develop and maintain virtualization capabilities that support software readiness milestones across component, subsystem, and vehicle levels.
- Design and integrate automation workflows to support component, subsystem, and vehicle-level regression testing in cloud-based co-simulation environments.
- Lead integration and deployment of automation capabilities within CI/CD frameworks (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions), ensuring that SOLE is a first-class citizen in GM’s software delivery pipelines.
- Partner with cybersecurity, infrastructure, and compliance teams to ensure SOLE architecture and implementations meet GM security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor and influence engineers and technical leads across teams, raising the overall bar for cloud architecture, virtualization, and test automation practices.
- Provide updates, technical demonstrations, and live presentations to leadership and external organizations, effectively communicating architecture, roadmap, and platform value.
Yours Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in cloud applications, virtualization, co-simulation, embedded software development, test automation, or validation roles.
- Demonstrated experience serving as a solution architect, technical lead, or platform owner for complex, cloud-hosted platforms or large-scale simulation/automation environments.
- Strong expertise in programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Java, SystemC, Quarkus, SpringBoot, Micronaut, and CAPL, with the ability to remain hands-on for critical-path components and prototypes.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP), containerization, and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, Singularity).
- Hands-on experience with Terraform and Bicep or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Multi-region cloud experience: designing and managing multi-region infrastructure for high availability, resiliency, disaster recovery, and scalable service delivery.
- Experience with messaging and event-driven technologies such as Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Azure Event Hubs for building scalable, asynchronous, event-driven integrations.
- Working knowledge of embedded control system test automation and co-simulation integration/execution.
- Hands-on experience with automotive development tools (e.g., Vector CANape/CANoe, dSpace SystemDesk, VEOS, AutoVal, Intrepid Vehicle Spy).
- Hands-on experience with Jenkins and GitHub Actions for automation and CI/CD.
- Demonstrated success in leading complex, high-ambiguity technical initiatives to completion, including defining architecture, aligning stakeholders, and guiding teams through delivery.
- Excellent communication skills and consistent demonstration of leadership competencies, with the ability to influence without direct authority across multiple organizations.
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline.
- AWS, Azure, or GCP certification.
- Experience with GM in-house development and test automation tools and libraries.
- Experience architecting or operating large-scale virtualization, co-simulation, or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL)-like environments in the cloud.
- Familiarity with scalable simulation deployment methodologies and event-driven simulation (synchronous/asynchronous).
- Familiarity with software development build processes and associated tools (Gerrit, Jenkins, Git, etc.).
- Familiarity with automotive or related industry validation testing procedures.
- Experience defining and maintaining architecture decision records (ADRs), roadmaps, and standards for platforms that support multiple programs and products.
- Proven ability to coach and mentor senior engineers and lead architecture forums, design reviews, or guilds focused on cloud, virtualization, and test automation.
