Senior Financial Analyst – Controllership Balance Sheet & Cash Flow Reporting
General Motors is seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Senior Financial Analyst to join our Controllership team, focusing on Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Reporting. This role will be integral in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of GM’s consolidated balance sheet and statement of cash flows.
You will partner closely with SEC Reporting, Regional/Functional Controllership, Treasury, Tax, and other Finance teams to understand significant transactions and business drivers, translate them into appropriate balance sheet and cash flow classifications, and support high-quality internal and external reporting.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate the balance sheet and cash flow considerations of significant or unusual transactions in coordination with Treasury, Tax, SEC Reporting, and Regional/Functional Controllership teams.
- Analyze period-over-period changes in key balance sheet and cash flow line items, providing clear, concise explanations of drivers.
- Prepare and review consolidated balance sheet and cash flow schedules and related analytics to support GM’s quarterly and annual close and reporting processes.
- Prepare and maintain support for balance sheet and cash flow disclosures, including internal packages and analytics used by SEC Reporting for Forms 10‑K/10‑Q, earnings materials, and management reporting.
- Support the external audit process by providing timely and accurate documentation, rollforwards, and explanations related to balance sheet accounts and cash flow classifications.
- Utilize financial systems and related Controllership tools for data extraction, analysis, and report generation specific to balance sheet and cash flow.
- Assist in the research and interpretation of relevant GAAP guidance impacting balance sheet and cash flow presentation (e.g., classifications between operating, investing, and financing activities) and assess impacts on GM’s reporting.
- Participate in and, where appropriate, lead special projects and process improvement initiatives (e.g., system implementations, automation, enhancements to working capital analytics) related to balance sheet and cash flow reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant accounting/finance experience, with proven experience in balance sheet and/or cash flow reporting and analysis.
- Strong financial statement acumen, including an understanding of GAAP and the interactions between the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex transactions and determine appropriate balance sheet and cash flow classification and presentation.
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and precision in financial data.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is essential.
- Familiarity with financial consolidations systems is highly desired.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with an ability to translate detailed transactional activity into clear, executive-ready explanations.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and to manage multiple priorities across close, forecasting, and project activities.
Location: Hybrid. This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the - Global HQ Hudson Building, Detroit, Mi three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business]
