About GM China Design Studio

GM China Design Studio is both a production design studio and an advanced design studio. We shape meaningful vehicle experiences for GM brands serving customers in China and global markets, connecting near-term production programs with forward-looking exploration.

We are committed to creating an exceptional design environment where creativity, beauty, craftsmanship, and storytelling can thrive. Our designers work across disciplines and cultures to translate customer understanding, brand identity, and emerging technologies into compelling design stories, immersive experiences, and intuitive digital interactions.

About This Evergreen Requisition

This evergreen requisition is established for talent pipelining purposes. GM China Design Studio is building a long-term pipeline of creative talent in Design Visualization, Immersive Experiences, and UX/UI Design, primarily at Designer to Lead Designer levels, in support of current and anticipated business needs.

We welcome exceptional designers from around the world who are interested in contributing to production programs and advanced design exploration in our China studio. These are hands-on, individual-contributor opportunities; responsibilities and project ownership will reflect each candidate’s specialization and experience. People-management experience is not required.

This posting covers several related specialisms rather than a single role requiring expertise in every discipline. We welcome specialists in visualization or UX/UI, as well as designers whose work bridges these areas.

When submitting your application, please include:

  • An updated resume or CV, indicating your primary area of interest and relevant experience.
  • An updated portfolio, showreel, or case studies demonstrating your creative process, relevant craft, and personal contribution to the work. Visualization applicants may highlight imagery, animation, real-time content, or immersive experiences; UX/UI applicants may highlight research insights, interaction flows, prototypes, visual design, and design outcomes.

Please ensure your materials exclude undisclosed, confidential, proprietary, or otherwise sensitive information, projects, or materials belonging to employers or clients. Share only work you are authorized to disclose.

Our recruiting and design teams will review your materials. If your profile aligns with a current or future opportunity, a recruiter will contact you to discuss next steps. This is an ongoing talent pipeline, rather than a commitment to an immediate vacancy; contact timing will depend on business needs and relevant opportunities.

If you do not meet every element below, we still encourage you to apply. We value distinctive creative perspectives, strong specialist capabilities, and the potential to grow.

The Opportunity

Help bring vehicle design to life through visualization, digital storytelling, immersive experiences, and human-centered UX/UI design. Within our broader design delivery and studio operations environment, you may help teams experience and evaluate design proposals or develop the digital interfaces customers use in and around the vehicle.

Visualization opportunities focus on communicating design intent through imagery, animation, real-time content, and virtual reviews. UX/UI opportunities focus on developing intuitive, safe, and emotionally compelling interactions for in-vehicle interfaces and connected digital experiences, from early concepts through production implementation.

You will collaborate with relevant partners across Interior and Exterior Design, CMF, digital sculpting, UX Research, Studio Engineering, software development, infotainment, advanced driver-assistance systems, product planning, and studio operations. Assignments may involve global studios, North American software teams, and local development partners, connecting global design direction with China customer needs and implementation requirements.

What You May Do

Responsibilities will be selected according to your specialization, experience, and assigned program. You are not expected to perform every activity listed below.

Design Visualization, Animation & Immersive Experiences

  • Create high-quality still images, animations, films, and presentation content that communicate vehicle design intent, material expression, and compelling visual stories.
  • Prepare and refine digital scenes, lighting, materials, camera composition, and animation using design data in collaboration with designers, CMF specialists, and digital sculptors.
  • Develop real-time visualization, configurators, and interactive content for design exploration, reviews, and program milestones.
  • Build and support virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and head-mounted display experiences for immersive design evaluation and virtual collaboration.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to visualize and simulate cockpit interactions, interface behavior, and integrated digital experiences where relevant.
  • Prepare review-ready assets, check visual fidelity and interactive performance, and troubleshoot content or workflow issues with relevant partners.
  • Explore and improve visualization workflows to increase quality, efficiency, and reuse; coordinate assigned deliverables with external content partners when needed.

UX/UI & Human–Machine Interface Design

  • Develop UX/UI concepts for advanced and production programs, from problem framing and use scenarios through interaction design, visual design, and implementation support.
  • Translate customer insights, brand direction, and relevant safety and regulatory considerations into information architecture, navigation models, and interaction flows.
  • Create user journeys, personas informed by research, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity interfaces for instrument clusters, center displays, head-up displays, and connected experiences.
  • Define and document interface behavior for functions such as navigation, media, climate, vehicle status, driver-assistance states, alerts, and personalization, according to program scope.
  • Collaborate with Interior Design and CMF to integrate displays, physical controls, and lighting behavior into a cohesive in-cabin experience.
  • Work with engineering, software teams, and local development partners to refine feasible solutions, communicate specifications, and support implementation across hardware, platforms, and markets.
  • Build prototypes and support usability studies, customer research, simulator evaluations, or in-vehicle testing; translate findings into iterative design improvements.
  • Contribute to design systems, reusable components, interaction patterns, and guidelines that support consistency across vehicles, platforms, and regions.

Contributions Shared Across Specialisms

  • Present work clearly in design reviews and cross-functional discussions, explaining design intent, rationale, trade-offs, and the customer or program benefit.
  • Plan and deliver assigned work against agreed priorities, review milestones, and quality expectations; communicate progress, dependencies, and risks early.
  • Respond constructively to feedback and collaborate across disciplines, cultures, and time zones to resolve design and delivery challenges.
  • Stay curious about emerging visualization, immersive, UX/UI, HMI, and digital product practices, applying relevant innovations thoughtfully.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to reusable assets and effective workflows. Experienced designers may provide craft guidance or peer feedback without formal supervisory responsibility.
  • Protect confidential design information and respect intellectual property throughout development, collaboration, and presentation.

What You May Bring

We welcome different career paths and levels of experience. The capabilities below describe potential areas of fit, not a cumulative checklist. Depth in a relevant specialism is valued; expertise in both visualization and UX/UI is not required.

Foundations Across Specialisms

  • Education or equivalent practical experience in interaction design, digital media, animation, visual communication, industrial or transportation design, human–computer interaction, or a related discipline.
  • A portfolio demonstrating creative thinking, craft, problem-solving, attention to detail, and a clear connection between design intent and execution.
  • Experience gained through professional work, internships, academic projects, or independent practice, appropriate to the opportunity. Relevant backgrounds may include automotive, digital products, consumer electronics, gaming, film, architectural visualization, or other adjacent fields.
  • Strong visual communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain ideas, incorporate feedback, and work constructively with design and technical partners.
  • An organized approach to priorities and deadlines, with curiosity and adaptability when learning new tools, workflows, or subject areas.

Relevant to Visualization-Focused Opportunities

  • Capabilities in one or more areas such as rendering, animation, digital storytelling, real-time visualization, interactive content, or immersive experience development.
  • A good eye for composition, lighting, materials, color, visual fidelity, and presentation quality.
  • Experience with VRED, Unreal Engine, Blender, or comparable tools relevant to your specialism; mastery of every listed platform is not expected.
  • Familiarity with digital asset preparation, scene development, real-time performance, or VR/MR review workflows, depending on the role.

Relevant to UX/UI-Focused Opportunities

  • Capabilities in one or more areas such as user-centered design, information architecture, interaction design, interface design, prototyping, or design systems.
  • The ability to translate research and complex functional needs into understandable user flows, interfaces, and documented behavior.
  • Experience with relevant interface design and prototyping tools, supported by clear design reasoning and the ability to learn new workflows.
  • Awareness of usability, accessibility, driver attention, and safety considerations relevant to in-vehicle experiences. Automotive HMI or production software experience is valuable for some opportunities, but not required across the entire pipeline.
  • Interest in working with research, engineering, and software partners to validate concepts and preserve design intent through implementation.

Experience and Ownership

  • For Designer opportunities: demonstrated potential and relevant craft, with the ability to develop assigned work, respond to feedback, and grow through collaboration and guidance.
  • For Senior Designer opportunities: the ability to independently own complex deliverables within your specialism, resolve design or technical challenges, coordinate with stakeholders, and contribute craft expertise to the team.

We do not require prior supervisory responsibilities, performance-management experience, or ownership of team staffing and resource allocation for these individual-contributor opportunities.
