About the Team

Compute & Connectivity Hardware (CCH) is part of GM's Vehicle Software & Electronics Engineering (VSEE) organization within Software & Services Engineering. Our team develops the hardware foundation that powers GM's software-defined vehicles, including compute platforms, connectivity systems, networking architectures, displays, and other electronic technologies that enable infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), vehicle controls, and connected customer experiences.

From concept through production, CCH engineers drive architecture, requirements development, electronics design, hardware integration, validation, launch, and in-market performance. We partner closely with software, systems, cybersecurity, functional safety, manufacturing, suppliers, and vehicle engineering teams to deliver reliable, scalable hardware solutions across GM's global vehicle portfolio.

The Opportunity

At General Motors, we're building a future with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. As vehicle displays become increasingly central to the customer experience, we are investing in next-generation display technologies that enable higher performance, improved visual quality, and enhanced reliability for future vehicles.

We are seeking an experienced Display Panel Engineer (LCD) to join our Advanced Display Technology team. In this role, you will lead the exploration, development, and maturation of next-generation LCD panel technologies, with particular focus on TFT backplane architecture, pixel design, driver electronics, and halo artifact reduction.

This is a technology incubation and New Technology Introduction (NTI) role, responsible for advancing emerging LCD innovations from early concept through technical validation and readiness for future production programs. You will collaborate with leading display panel manufacturers, semiconductor suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams to shape the next generation of automotive displays used in instrument clusters, center-stack displays, passenger infotainment systems, and other cockpit applications.

What You'll Do

Technology Development & Innovation

  • Evaluate and benchmark emerging LCD panel technologies, including a-Si, LTPS, and oxide TFT backplane architectures.
  • Define technical requirements and feasibility criteria for next-generation pixel structures, sub-pixel layouts, aperture optimization, and storage capacitor designs.
  • Partner with display suppliers to identify, assess, and mature breakthrough LCD technologies for future automotive applications.
  • Develop technology roadmaps and support strategic display architecture decisions for future vehicle programs.

Display Performance & Halo Mitigation

  • Lead the development and validation of technologies that reduce halo artifacts associated with local-dimming backlights and pixel-level optical interactions.
  • Collaborate with panel, backlight, and semiconductor suppliers to identify root causes and implement design or algorithmic improvements.
  • Assess the impact of backplane and pixel architecture on display performance, including brightness, response time, color accuracy, viewing angle, contrast, and uniformity.

Driver Electronics & System Integration

  • Define and validate requirements for timing controllers (TCONs) and driver IC architectures.
  • Evaluate gate and source driver timing, gamma correction methods, and display interface protocols.
  • Work closely with semiconductor suppliers to align display driver technologies with future panel architectures.

Validation & Technology Maturation

  • Lead proof-of-concept builds and laboratory evaluations of emerging panel technologies.
  • Conduct performance characterization across response time, gray-to-gray performance, power consumption, luminance, contrast ratio, and uniformity metrics.
  • Develop and execute validation plans that assess technology readiness under automotive operating conditions, including temperature cycling, humidity exposure, vibration, and sunlight loading.
  • Analyze test data and correlate results to panel design decisions and technology maturity objectives.

Supplier Collaboration & Production Readiness

  • Drive root-cause analysis and resolution of panel-level issues including mura, non-uniformity, image retention, line/point defects, and halo artifacts.
  • Coordinate closely with optical engineers and backlight development teams to ensure alignment with broader display technology roadmaps.
  • Prepare technology readiness documentation and lead successful transfer of mature technologies to sourcing and production engineering organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Display Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in LCD display technology development, advanced engineering, display electronics, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of TFT backplane technologies, including a-Si, LTPS, and/or oxide TFT architectures.
  • Experience with LCD pixel circuit design and panel architecture development.
  • Knowledge of halo artifact mechanisms and mitigation techniques associated with local dimming technologies.
  • Understanding of timing controller (TCON) and display driver IC architectures.
  • Knowledge of how TFT layouts, aperture ratios, and pixel structures impact optical performance and display quality.
  • Experience using panel simulation, characterization, and laboratory evaluation tools.
  • Familiarity with automotive display reliability and environmental qualification requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Display Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working directly with LCD panel manufacturers, display suppliers, or display material providers.
  • Demonstrated success advancing new technologies from concept through validation and production readiness.
  • Experience with Mini-LED local dimming systems, high-refresh-rate displays, and halo mitigation algorithms.
  • Knowledge of material qualification and durability testing for display backplanes and pixel technologies.
  • Experience supporting technology transfer activities into sourcing, product development, or production organizations.

Why Join Us?
