About the Team

Compute & Connectivity Hardware (CCH) is part of GM’s Vehicle Software & Electronics Engineering (VSEE) organization within Software & Services Engineering. The team develops the physical hardware foundation for GM’s software-defined vehicles, including compute, connectivity, networking, displays, and other electronic platforms that enable in-vehicle software, infotainment, ADAS, vehicle controls, and connected experiences.

CCH’s work spans architecture, requirements, hardware and electronics design, embedded hardware, systems integration, validation, launch, and in-market performance. Our engineers collaborate across software, systems, controls, cybersecurity, functional safety, vehicle engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing to develop reliable, production-ready hardware for GM’s vehicle portfolio.

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Display Engineer, Optics & Cover Glass to join our Advanced Display Technology team and drive New Technology Introduction (NTI) for display optics, cover lens materials, coatings, and optical bonding solutions. In this role, you will evaluate, develop, and mature emerging technologies that enhance display performance, durability, efficiency, and user experience across future automotive display systems.

Working closely with display manufacturers, optical material suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams, you will assess new technologies, establish validation methodologies, lead proof-of-concept activities, and advance solutions from early-stage development through technology readiness. Your work will help build a robust technology pipeline for future instrument clusters, center displays, and passenger infotainment systems.

The Role

As a Senior Display Engineer, Optics & Cover Glass, you will be responsible for exploring and developing advanced optical and cover lens technologies for next-generation automotive displays.

The role focuses on optical films and light management systems, including brightness enhancement films (BEF/DBEF), diffuser and prism films, LCD and OLED polarizers, anti-reflective (AR), anti-glare (AG), and anti-fingerprint (AF) coatings, chemically strengthened glass, polymer cover lens materials, and optical bonding technologies.

A key responsibility is establishing the optical characterization and benchmarking methodologies used to evaluate display performance, cover glass solutions, coatings, and bonded display stacks throughout the technology development lifecycle.

You will partner closely with display panel suppliers, optical material suppliers, and internal teams to evaluate emerging technologies, validate performance against automotive requirements, reduce technical risk, and mature solutions for future vehicle programs. Once technologies achieve the appropriate level of readiness, you will support their transfer into sourcing and production organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Scout and evaluate emerging optical film, cover glass, coating, and optical bonding technologies for future automotive displays.
  • Define technical requirements, performance metrics, and feasibility criteria for next-generation display optics and cover lens solutions.
  • Lead proof-of-concept evaluations and technology demonstrations with suppliers.
  • Develop optical measurement methodologies and benchmarking processes to assess technology readiness.
  • Conduct optical simulations and data analysis to evaluate brightness, contrast, reflectivity, viewing angle, color performance, and efficiency.
  • Evaluate AR, AG, and AF coating technologies to improve display readability, durability, and user experience.
  • Analyze optical characterization data and correlate results to material, process, and system-level design decisions.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and resolution of optical issues, including reflections, glare, Mura, halo artifacts, Newton Rings, and coating non-uniformity.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to validate technologies under automotive environmental and reliability conditions.
  • Build technology maturation packages and support technology transfer into future sourcing and production programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Display Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in display optics, optical films, cover glass, coatings, or optical bonding technologies.
  • Strong understanding of LCD and OLED optical architectures and light-management technologies.
  • Experience with optical films, polarizers, coatings, and bonded display stack solutions.
  • Familiarity with optical performance metrics such as luminance, contrast, haze, reflectivity, color shift, and viewing angle.
  • Experience with optical characterization equipment and optical simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of optical bonding materials and processes (OCA/OCR).
  • Understanding of automotive display performance and reliability requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Display Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working with display panel, optical film, glass, coating, or optical bonding suppliers.
  • Knowledge of cover glass technologies, strengthening processes, and advanced glass manufacturing methods.
  • Experience with optical bonding and display stack integration.
  • Familiarity with Mini-LED display architectures and associated optical systems.
  • Experience qualifying materials, coatings, and bonded display solutions for thermal, UV, mechanical, and environmental durability.
  • Demonstrated experience advancing technologies from concept through validation and production readiness
