The Role:
The Industrial Engineer / Ergonomist will partner with Production, Global Supply Chain, Manufacturing Engineering, Plant Safety, Medical, and UAW leadership to improve plant performance while protecting employee health, safety, and well-being. This role combines industrial engineering, lean material strategy, ergonomics, standardized work, and continuous improvement to eliminate non-value-added work, reduce ergonomic risk, improve productivity, and support current operations, launch activities, and future-state manufacturing plans.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
Industrial Engineering (50%)
- Implement common Industrial Engineering business practices and processes in assigned areas.
- Execute Lean Material Strategies (LMS) and leverage GM’s Global Manufacturing System (GMS) to continuously improve plant material flow and eliminate waste of time and materials.
- Design and improve work operations that meet safety, quality, ergonomic, delivery, and efficiency requirements.
- Conduct manpower time studies through motion analysis and apply standard time data within the Global Material Optimization System (GMOS) and Assembly Production System (APS).
- Maintain accurate part routings to assembly locations and accurate area layouts using computer-aided design tools such as AutoCAD.
- Evaluate bottlenecks and support throughput, productivity, capacity, and total-cost improvements in assigned areas.
- Coach and teach lean material strategies, standardized work, and problem-solving methods to production-floor team members.
Ergonomics (50%)
- Implement and co-administer the plant ergonomics process with UAW partners in alignment with the National UAW-GM Ergonomics Agreement and GM’s Workplace Safety System Performance Standard.
- Serve as the plant ergonomics subject-matter expert for launch, production trials, productivity initiatives, and day-to-day manufacturing operations.
- Capture, analyze, and report ergonomic and medical injury/illness data; develop metrics and monitor trends to identify risk and drive corrective action.
- Perform first- and second-level ergonomic risk analyses for current-state and future-state processes using approved tools.
- Apply GM Ergonomics Design Requirements to jobs and material-handling systems, including CMA, LMS, containers, dollies, and point-of-use racks.
- Collaborate with Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production, Plant Medical, and other stakeholders to identify risks, develop solutions, implement job modifications, and drive issues to closure.
- Enter ergonomic issues into the GM Technical Ergonomic Database (TED) or related systems and manage actions through closure.
- Provide regular updates to the Plant Safety Review Board (PSRB), participate in the Local Joint Health and Safety Committee (LJHSC)
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with UAW ergonomic partners, Production, Global Supply Chain, Plant Medical, Safety, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design, and other key stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively as one team with all levels of the organization and adapt communication methods to different interpersonal styles and audiences.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, or a closely related engineering or ergonomics field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- At least 2 years of industrial engineering or ergonomics experience in a manufacturing or assembly environment.
- Experience conducting time studies, motion analysis, or ergonomic risk assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and execute projects while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work onsite, including off-shift, overtime, weekends, and other hours as needed to support plant operations.
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with STDS, APS, GMOS, TED, and other GM ergonomics, production, or manufacturing systems.
