Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. The successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned GM worksite, five days per week and to respond to the site in the event of an emergency after hours, on weekend or holidays.
The Role:
The Industrial Engineer / Ergonomist will partner with Production, Global Supply Chain, Manufacturing Engineering, Plant Safety, Medical, and UAW leadership to improve plant performance while protecting employee health, safety, and well-being. This role combines industrial engineering, lean material strategy, ergonomics, standardized work, and continuous improvement to eliminate non-value-added work, reduce ergonomic risk, improve productivity, and support current operations, launch activities, and future-state manufacturing plans.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
Industrial Engineering (50%)
- Implement common Industrial Engineering business practices and processes in assigned areas.
- Execute Lean Material Strategies (LMS) and leverage GM’s Global Manufacturing System (GMS) to continuously improve plant material flow and eliminate waste of time and materials.
- Design and improve work operations that meet safety, quality, ergonomic, delivery, and efficiency requirements.
- Conduct manpower time studies through motion analysis and apply standard time data within the Global Material Optimization System (GMOS) and Assembly Production System (APS).
- Maintain accurate part routings to assembly locations and accurate area layouts using computer-aided design tools such as AutoCAD.
- Evaluate bottlenecks and support throughput, productivity, capacity, and total-cost improvements in assigned areas.
- Coach and teach lean material strategies, standardized work, and problem-solving methods to production-floor team members.
Ergonomics (50%)
- Implement and co-administer the plant ergonomics process with UAW partners in alignment with the National UAW-GM Ergonomics Agreement and GM’s Workplace Safety System Performance Standard.
- Serve as the plant ergonomics subject-matter expert for launch, production trials, productivity initiatives, and day-to-day manufacturing operations.
- Capture, analyze, and report ergonomic and medical injury/illness data; develop metrics and monitor trends to identify risk and drive corrective action.
- Perform first- and second-level ergonomic risk analyses for current-state and future-state processes using approved tools.
- Apply GM Ergonomics Design Requirements to jobs and material-handling systems, including CMA, LMS, containers, dollies, and point-of-use racks.
- Collaborate with Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production, Plant Medical, and other stakeholders to identify risks, develop solutions, implement job modifications, and drive issues to closure.
- Enter ergonomic issues into the GM Technical Ergonomic Database (TED) or related systems and manage actions through closure.
- Provide regular updates to the Plant Safety Review Board (PSRB), participate in the Local Joint Health and Safety Committee (LJHSC)
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with UAW ergonomic partners, Production, Global Supply Chain, Plant Medical, Safety, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design, and other key stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively as one team with all levels of the organization and adapt communication methods to different interpersonal styles and audiences.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, or a closely related engineering or ergonomics field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- At least 2 years of industrial engineering or ergonomics experience in a manufacturing or assembly environment.
- Experience conducting time studies, motion analysis, or ergonomic risk assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and execute projects while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work onsite, including off-shift, overtime, weekends, and other hours as needed to support plant operations.
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with STDS, APS, GMOS, TED, and other GM ergonomics, production, or manufacturing systems.
- Knowledge of AMR/AGV material handling system
