The Role:  

The Business Analyst – Zero Waste, Chemical, & Resource Management (SP2) provides analytical and operational support to GM’s global Zero Waste, Resource Management (RM), Chemical Management (CM), and biological control programs. This role enables data-driven decision making, effective budget management, and disciplined execution to enable the SP2 team to advance GM’s environmental, safety, and cost-optimization objectives.

The analyst partners closely with SP2 program leads, plant teams, Infrastructure & Corporate Citizenship (ICC), Procurement, Finance, EH&S, and external suppliers to ensure goals are set, tracked, and achieved across North America and globally

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Zero Waste program support

• Support development, alignment, and annual refresh of global Zero Waste goals, targets, and roadmaps for SP2 programs.
• Maintain dashboards and scorecards for Zero Waste performance (e.g., waste generation, diversion, recovery, and cost metrics) at plant, regional, and enterprise levels.
• Track progress against site-level action plans, escalate gaps, and highlight best practices and high-performing sites.
• Coordinate recurring Zero Waste governance routines (cadence, agendas, pre-read materials, action item tracking, and follow-up).

Resource Management (RM) and Chemical Management (CM) financial support

• Support development of annual RM and CM budgets for US and Canada, including volume, rate, and savings assumptions.
• Build and maintain budget tracking tools that connect forecasts, actuals, and variances at the program, supplier, and site levels.
• Coordinate purchase order (PO) requests, shopping carts, and change requests for RM, CM, and related environmental services, ensuring alignment with budget and contracts.
• Monitor PO status, goods receipts, and invoice issues; work with Finance, Procurement, and suppliers to resolve discrepancies.
• Provide periodic and ad hoc spend analysis, including cost drivers, savings realization, and scenario analysis.

Zero Waste and Environmental Capex support

• Support Zero Waste and related environmental capex planning by compiling site requests, business cases, and benefit estimates.
• Track approval status, spend, and realized benefits of capex projects (e.g., equipment for waste reduction, segregation, logistics, and treatment).
• Maintain a portfolio view of Zero Waste and environmental investments, including timing, risks, and interdependencies.

Biological control of Metal Removal Fluids (MRF) and Metal Removal Fluids Strategy Team (MRFST) support

• Support SP2’s biological control responsibilities for MRF and MRFST, including program documentation, data collection, and routine reporting.
• Coordinate with plants, vendors, and technical experts to monitor performance (e.g., treatment effectiveness, volumes, quality parameters, and operational issues).
• Help identify optimization opportunities in dosing, equipment, logistics, and supplier performance to improve safety, reliability, and total cost.

Data, analytics, and insights

• Analyze RM and CM safety incidents, near misses, and risk identifications to detect patterns, “read across” opportunities, and common tasks with elevated risk.
• Develop visualizations and summaries that translate complex data into clear insights and recommendations for SP2 leadership and stakeholders.
• Maintain and continuously improve standard reports, dashboards, and tools (e.g., in Excel, Power BI, or other GM-approved platforms).
• Aggregate and analyze waste, recycling, and diversion data (volumes, materials, destinations, costs, and rebates) across sites to identify trends, outliers, and improvement opportunities.

Industry trends, technology, and benchmarking

• Monitor external trends in waste reduction, waste handling and logistics, biological treatment, and chemical selection for indirect materials.
• Summarize industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies with potential impact on GM’s Zero Waste, RM, and CM strategies.
• Support pilots and evaluations of new technologies or service models, including data collection, KPI design, and results reporting.
• Provide structured benchmarking against peer companies and best-in-class service models where data is available.

Governance, processes, and documentation

• Maintain organized, current documentation for SP2 programs (standards, procedures, playbooks, training content, meeting notes, and decision logs).
• Support development and refinement of common processes, templates, and tools for Zero Waste, RM, CM, and biological control.
• Help ensure alignment with GM safety, compliance, and information management requirements in all SP2 program artifacts.
• Coordinate cross-functional working sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing forums to disseminate lessons learned and best practices.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) :

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business, Data Analytics, or related fields
• 5+ years of experience in business analysis, data analytics, operations, EH&S, environmental programs, or related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience with data analysis and reporting (Microsoft Excel; experience with tools such as Power BI or similar is a plus).
• Experience supporting budgets, forecasts, or financial tracking (e.g., spend, variance analysis, savings tracking); familiarity with enterprise systems for POs and invoices (e.g., SAP or equivalent).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with the ability to work with large datasets and multiple systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to summarize complex topics and influence stakeholders at different levels.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through on commitments with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

• Experience in waste management, resource management, chemical management, environmental engineering, or industrial operations.
• Familiarity with Zero Waste concepts, waste hierarchy, and recycling/landfill diversion strategies.
• Experience working with safety data (incidents, near misses, risk assessments) and translating insights into practical risk-reduction actions.
• Knowledge of biological treatment or biological control applications in material recovery, wastewater, or related environmental systems.
• Experience working with manufacturing plants, logistics providers, and/or environmental service suppliers.
• Demonstrated ability to develop or improve business processes, templates, and governance routines.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.

• The salary range for this role is $105,600 – $140,700. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
• Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
