About the Role:
The Design Lead Technical (DLT) provides technical leadership, daily work direction, and project coordination for a team of Designers within the Bumper, Fascia, Grille & Trim organization. This role is responsible for developing and driving high-quality math-based design solutions that meet complex system and subsystem requirements while ensuring successful vehicle integration across all phases of the Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP).
The DLT applies advanced technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and creative problem-solving to develop and implement virtual vehicle integration solutions that support program objectives for quality, timing, cost, manufacturability, and performance. This position requires a high degree of independence, cross-functional collaboration, and leadership in the execution of design deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Team Development
Provide guidance, coaching, and technical direction to Designers by:
- Driving understanding and application of system and subsystem requirements within the assigned SMT area.
- Ensuring effective use of GM CAD and Data Management systems.
- Leading the development, refinement, and release of Criteria and Typical Sections.
- Establishing ownership and consistency of Standard Modeling Methods and Virtual Integration Methods.
- Promoting adherence to design processes and best practices, including:
- Standard Modeling Methods
- Clearance Analysis
- Vehicle Assembly Structure (VAS)
- Global Data Security requirements
- Coaching team members in Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and vehicle integration principles.
- Supporting completion of NX analyses and ensuring proper interpretation and application of results.
- Sharing lessons learned and driving continuous improvement through best practice updates, training sessions, and mentoring activities.
Technical Execution & Program Leadership
Lead and support program execution by:
- Facilitating and participating in Design Reviews, Virtual Reviews, Program Development Team (PDT) meetings, and other cross-functional workgroups.
- Developing and validating virtual integration solutions for components, subsystems, and full vehicle applications.
- Ensuring material, mass, and part specification data are accurate and maintained within math models.
- Collaborating with CAE teams to evaluate studies and implement design improvements.
- Providing expertise on GVDP requirements, math fidelity expectations, and Global Math Fidelity Template deliverables.
- Supporting the integration of subsystem designs into overall vehicle systems.
- Conducting design studies, evaluating alternatives, and providing technical recommendations to support program decisions.
- Driving quality and timing of design releases to ensure compliance with GVDP milestones and program deliverables.
- Identifying and resolving technical issues while balancing system requirements, manufacturing constraints, cost targets, and vehicle performance objectives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent relevant experience.
- Advanced proficiency in NX CAD modeling and virtual vehicle integration.
- Strong understanding of vehicle systems, manufacturing processes, and design release requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and drive results in a fast-paced development environment.
- Effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Preferred
- Extensive experience supporting vehicle development through multiple GVDP cycles.
- Knowledge of GM design standards, math methodologies, and data management systems.
- Experience leading component, subsystem, or vehicle integration activities across multiple programs.
