Position Overview

General Motors of Canada is seeking a Powerhouse 2nd Class Stationary Engineer to support the Oshawa Powerhouse and Site Utilities operation. A Powerhouse Journeyperson is an ambitious tradesperson who is responsible for safely operating and maintaining gas fired boilers, large centrifugal and reciprocating air compressors, heat exchangers, water softeners, chilled water systems, cooling towers, wastewater systems, high quality water systems, and/or other related equipment found in an industrial powerhouse.

Powerhouse operations at Oshawa run on a 24/7 basis , and the role must support continuous operations across weekends and holidays as required.

Role Summary

In this role, you will help operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain utility equipment that is essential to safe and reliable plant operations. You will work closely with powerhouse leadership, maintenance staff, engineers, and site stakeholders to ensure equipment performance, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day operation of the Oshawa powerhouse and site utilities in a 24/7 industrial environment.

  • Operate and monitor high-pressure steam boilers and auxiliary systems, including burners, feedwater systems, condensate systems, and deaerators.

  • Perform routine rounds, equipment readings, log entries, and operating checks on boilers, pressure vessels, steam distribution, compressors, dryers, and related utility systems.

  • Monitor compressed air, water, and other utility systems; identify abnormal conditions and escalate issues according to established procedures.

  • Perform routine boiler, condensate, and cooling water sampling and testing, and support water treatment equipment and chemical control activities.

  • Support maintenance and servicing of powerhouse utility equipment, including compressor and chiller dryer systems, within the scope of qualifications and site procedures.

  • Maintain required logs, checklists, Task Instruction Sheets (TIS), and inspection documentation to support compliance and standard work.

  • Follow all applicable safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, and environmental procedures.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready powerhouse and utility work area.

  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, energy efficiency, and operational performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Required to safely and efficiently operate, maintain and repair high pressure steam gas fired boilers, air compressors, and all auxiliary equipment in a first class power plant

  • Able to trouble shoot and perform routine maintenance on various operational equipment

  • Perform the duties of the lead shift engineer as required

  • able to work on a rotating shift schedule (24/7/365)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Proficient Computer Skill

  • Working knowledge of Delta V Controls

  • Energetic and Self-Motivated

  • Able to work with minimal direct supervision and work independently and as part of a team

  • Possession of a valid 2nd Class Operator's Certificate (TSSA)

  • Possession of a valid 3rd Class Certificate, actively pursuing 2nd Class

  • must be prepared to work 12 hour continuous shifts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Power Engineering / Operating Engineer certification or progress toward certification.

  • Experience with boilers, steam systems, compressed air systems, water treatment, HVAC, or industrial utilities.

  • Familiarity with Ontario operating and pressure equipment requirements, inspections, and industrial utility safety practices.

  • Experience with preventative maintenance, equipment logs, and reliability-focused work practices.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools for logs, reporting, and communication.
