Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the GM Defense Production Facility in Concord, North Carolina on a full-time basis. This role requires flexibility to support changes in scheduled days, hours, and shift based on business needs.

The Role

The Integrated Product Support Packaging Engineer position’s focus is to drive packaging solutions to support customer deliveries. The Packaging Engineer takes inputs from multiple stakeholders, understanding supply chain & warehousing constraints to develop a robust solution (packaging & logistics) to support outbound service packaging. The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for developing and reviewing packaging solutions that comply with military specifications and standards. This role requires a deep understanding of Logistics Management Information (LMI) and Special Packaging Instructions (SPI). The successful candidate will work closely with the Integrated Product Support team to ensure that customer packaging requirements are met. This involves a high level of independent judgment, strategic vision, detailed analysis, technical understanding of Military Standard packaging requirements, and outstanding communication skills. The Packaging Engineer will support the best enterprise solution to support customer requirements.

What You'll Do

LMI and SPI Creation and Review

  • Lead 3rd Party Contractors on selection of SPI (Specialized Packaging Instruction) or LLRC (Long Life Re-Useable Containers) from the database of existing LLRC).
  • Ensure that all packaging documentation is accurate, complete, and in compliance with customer and regulatory standards.
  • Review existing packaging instructions and update them as needed to meet new requirements.
  • Update and maintain packaging plans in GMD systems.
  • Develop coded data packaging.
  • Develop and maintain LMIs and SPIs in accordance with military standards.

Military Standards Compliance and Kit Development

  • Stay current with military packaging standards, including MIL-STD-129, MIL-STD-2073, NATO and others as applicable.
  • Ensure that all packaging solutions meet or exceed these standards.
  • Provide guidance and support to the team on military packaging requirements.
  • Lead the development of and assure compliance with customer requirements for the kitting of tools and other material/equipment for customer delivery.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Participate in design reviews and provide input on packaging considerations.
  • Support development of Equipment Preservation Data sheet by reviewing and maintaining SPI packaging specifications.
  • Support Provisioning Conference engagements with Customer.

Testing and Validation

  • Packaging Testing: Conducting tests to validate the effectiveness of packaging solutions, such as drop tests, vibration tests, and environmental testing.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regularly reviewing and updating packaging designs based on test results and feedback.

Packaging Procurement

  • Define and purchase specialized outbound packaging ahead of organic sustainment.
  • ​Responsibility for the initial purchase of returnable packaging and maintaining the fleet size with volume and/or footprint changes.

Commercial outbound packaging support

  • Support development of commercial packaging plans for outbound service packaging.
  • Support the initial sourcing of expendable packaging with GMD Indirect Sourcing Team.

Process Implementation and Improvement

  • Develop and maintain expendable specifications for GMD that are similar to but different to the GM specifications due to government requirement, low volume and storage concerns for extended storage time (all time buys).
  • Identify problems, update, or modify work methods that may be complex in the work area without the benefit of defined procedures.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in packaging engineering in a defense or aerospace environment or other relevant related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of packaging standards and specifications.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and other relevant tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee).

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Bachelors in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Ability to read and understand government contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of military packaging standards and specifications.
  • Experience with LMI and SPI creation and review.
  • Experience with packaging for hazardous materials.
  • Certification in packaging engineering or related fields.
