Descrição
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
The Electrical Energy Management System and System Safety Engineer provides technical leadership for the definition, development, integration, and safety assurance of high voltage energy management systems, with a specific focus on high voltage protection, and additional responsibility for wireless device charging safety. This role applies systems engineering and ISO 26262–aligned system safety practices from concept through launch to ensure that customer, regulatory, and internal GM safety and performance requirements are met.
What You'll Do
Systems Engineering – High Voltage Energy Management
-
Own and maintain system-level requirements for assigned functions of the High Voltage Energy Management (HVEM) system, including the HV eFuse and related protection and control features.
-
Translate customer and feature needs for assigned functions into clear, traceable system requirements and allocate them to hardware, software, and interfaces.
-
Organize and maintain HVEM requirements in DNG (including safety, use cases, attributes such as ASIL/DVUL/regulatory links, and regulatory reference sections).
-
Define HVEM test expectations using GMW-based test case frameworks and identify gaps requiring additional coverage.
-
Lead, for assigned functions, resolution of new or complex HVEM requirements and issues, working with technical specialists to embed best practices and standard design solutions.
-
Own FMEA content and roll-down for assigned HVEM scope, ensuring consistency between system-level risk assessments and component mitigations.
-
Act as the technical expert for HVEM system intent and behavior for assigned functions, supporting issue triage, root cause identification, and robust field issue closure.
System Safety Engineering – Wireless Charging and HVEM
-
Execute the GM System Safety Process for HVEM and wireless device charging systems in alignment with ISO 26262 from concept through launch.
-
Own and maintain the safety case for wireless device charging and relevant HVEM functions, ensuring complete traceability from hazards to requirements and evidence.
-
Perform and/or guide key safety analyses (e.g., PHA, FTA, system element fault analysis, diagnostic coverage, delta impact, and requirements analysis).
-
Provide direction to Tier-1 suppliers on safety-related requirements, implementation expectations, and validation for HVEM and wireless charging.
-
Lead system safety reviews and apply the GM System Safety Checklist to assess safety impact and criticality of changes, recommending mitigations where needed.
-
Provide DVUL and safety approvals for development and launch software releases and confirm that safety requirements are validated prior to Ship-to-Commerce.
Cross-Functional Leadership and Collaboration
-
Serve as the primary systems and safety interface for HVEM and wireless charging across engineering, validation, manufacturing, and service teams.
-
Facilitate cross-functional trade-off discussions to reach lifecycle-aware solutions that balance performance, safety, robustness, cost, and serviceability.
-
Champion systems thinking and functional safety culture, and mentor less experienced engineers in requirements development, safety analysis, and safety case development.
-
Communicate technical status, risks, and safety posture clearly to program leadership and stakeholders.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems, Computer, or related field).
-
Systems engineering experience with complex mechatronic or embedded control systems, preferably in automotive, EV, or high-voltage applications.
-
Experience with safety-critical automotive systems and familiarity with ISO 26262 or comparable functional safety standards.
-
Proven ability to develop, structure, and manage system-level requirements and flow-down using requirements management tools (e.g., DNG or equivalent).
-
Hands-on experience with safety/reliability analyses (e.g., FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis, diagnostic coverage analysis).
-
Strong technical foundation in mechatronics, embedded control systems, vehicle systems behavior, and system safety processes.
-
Demonstrated ability to drive issue resolution and design convergence with cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to clearly convey system intent, requirements, trade-offs, and safety rationale to technical and leadership audiences.
-
Proven ability to work autonomously, managing priorities across multiple programs and deliverables with minimal supervision.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in an engineering discipline or systems engineering.
-
Direct experience with one or more: High voltage energy storage, energy management, or protection systems (e.g., HV eFuse, contactors, HV distribution); Wireless device charging systems and associated safety concerns; GM System Safety Process and internal standards.
-
Experience executing end-to-end functional safety lifecycle activities per ISO 26262 (concept, system, hardware, software levels).
-
Familiarity with GM Global Manufacturing and validation standards (e.g., GMWs) and vehicle DVUL processes.
-
Prior role as a Systems Engineer, System Safety Engineer, or similar on safety-critical automotive programs.
-
Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews, facilitate group discussions, and influence without authority across multiple organizations and time zones.
