Role Summary
We are looking for a hard working Lead Combustion System Development Engineer, who is responsible for planning, developing, and executing subsystem level tests in a world class testing and development facility. Tasks also include leading cross functional development teams, data analysis, calibration development, identifying opportunities for data reduction, while leading the migration of lab-based activities to math. This is an assignment where creativity, initiative and independent judgment are involved, and effective cross-organizational teamwork is crucial.
Key Responsibilities
· Actively lead the Product Development Teams while working with Technical Experts to improve design features, calibration strategies and current test methods. This may involve comprehending related ECU algorithms, associated calibration process, and evaluation of virtual metrics supporting hardware
· Collaborate with design, 1D and 3D analysis teams to collectively achieve program goals
· Track development test unit through build process - support setup and debugging to assure test readiness
· Track and report on testing progress and issues
· Develop and execute first-time capable tests for calibration and hardware development
· Lead diagnosis and resolution of issues that occur during setup and testing
· Utilize and create post processing tools to assure data quality and track usefulness of data in generation of final calibration or reports
· Develop, implement, and update standard work processes and procedures globally
· Interact with facilities, technical leads, calibration teams, hardware release engineers, and others to improve process and test efficiency
· Support math-based activities, migrating additional work from Road and Lab to Math based models and data analysis
· Train, Mentor, and develop new engineers
Required Skills and Experience
· Minimum 8 years of experience in automotive engineering with engine system knowledge
· Experience in spark ignited / compression ignited (SI/CI) engine systems, thermodynamic, and emission formation mechanisms
· Experience with all SW tools consisting of AVL PUMA, IndiCom, CAMEO, Concerto and ETAS INCA software
· Demonstrated drive for results
· Excellent planning and problem-solving skills in leading edge technology applications
· High level of oral and written communication skills
· High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others, and ability to establish peer relationships.
· Ability to prioritize work, resources, and work independently with minimal direction
· Proficient with computer and data acquisition systems
· Experience in data analysis to optimize testing or model results
· Ability to travel as required for offsite testing (less than 10%)
Preferred Skills and Experience
· Proficient use with AVL PUMA/IndiCom/CAMEO and ETAS INCA software
· Experience with propulsion system calibration in test and vehicle environments
· Knowledge and 10+ years experience with SI/CI combustion system component interactions, aftertreatment systems engine testing, calibration, model based controls, single cylinder engine operation, and hardware development tradeoffs
· Experience with engine dynamometer instrumentation/devices and emissions measurement systems
· Familiarity with government test cycles (e.g., FTP, US06, WLTP, RDE, RMC, LLC, HHDDT)
