The Role

As a valued Researcher in the Materials and Manufacturing Systems Research Lab at General Motors Research and Development, you will play a key role in advancing Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) capabilities for GM. You will innovate through next‑generation ideas, propose new project areas, and establish technical research plans that tightly couple computational modeling, data analytics, and targeted experiments. You will lead and execute materials science research to generate new insights, guide experimental efforts, and accelerate the design and deployment of advanced materials and processes through ICME frameworks for GM vehicle and manufacturing applications. You will document and communicate results through high‑quality technical reports, external publications, and records of invention.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and execute collaborative scientific research in materials science and ICME, generating new knowledge and enabling innovative materials solutions
  • Develop and apply multi‑scale, physics‑based models (e.g., process–structure–property–performance relationships) and data‑driven approaches to materials discovery, design, and performance prediction
  • Build and deploy ICME workflows that integrate process modeling, microstructure prediction, and property/performance simulation to inform component and system‑level design decisions
  • Partner closely with experimental researchers to design model‑informed experiments, interpret data through the lens of modeling results, and accelerate materials and process down‑selection
  • Drive internal and external collaborations with GM engineering teams, universities, national labs, and research partners focused on computational materials engineering and advanced manufacturing
  • Maintain awareness of the state‑of‑the‑art in materials science, ICME, and digital materials technologies, and translate emerging capabilities into impactful research directions
  • Drive external collaborations with Universities, National Laboratories, and suppliers
  • Secure government funding to support research efforts (e.g. Department of Energy, NSF)
  • Prepare timely, high‑quality technical reports and presentations to ensure effective communication of research outcomes to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Generate intellectual property to protect new inventions and research results
  • Assist and mentor other employees in accomplishing project and research goals

Your Skills & Abilities

  • Required PHD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering , or a closely related field.
  • Strong foundation in materials, thermodynamics, kinetics, and structure–property relationships
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary research teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to work effectively with GM internal and external collaborators

What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experienced individual researcher with 3-5 years experience
  • Experience with Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME)
  • Demonstrated publication record and/or intellectual property generation
  • Experience transitioning computational insights into applied engineering or manufacturing solutions

GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc.)
