Work Arrangement:

Hybrid:

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

Our Mission:

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role:

Join GM’s  Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC)  team within the  Software and Services  organization, where we develop and release control software and calibrations that drive the entire vehicle. From internal combustion engines and hybrid drive units to high-voltage batteries and chassis systems, our mission is to invent cutting-edge methods to control the world’s most advanced mechatronic systems.

We are seeking a  dynamic and experienced Engineering Group Manager  to lead a team focused on  Chassis Controls Design  and  Vehicle State Estimation  solutions for vehicle motion controls and estimation. In this role, you will oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of chassis control systems, ensuring they meet performance, scalability, and reliability standards. You will also foster a collaborative, agile environment that empowers innovation and growth. This team works cross-functionally with embedded controls, systems, product, and program teams to deliver high-quality solutions that support GM’s revenue-generating portfolio and accelerate our transition to an all-electric future. As a people leader, you will shape strategic initiatives that align with GM’s transformation from an automaker to a tech-driven company.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and develop a team of controls and estimation engineers delivering in‑house vehicle motion control and state estimation algorithms across chassis domains.

  • Set technical direction for control and estimation design, including robustness, observability, fault tolerance, scalability, and real‑time performance.

  • Own system architecture and design strategy, defining modular, reusable, and software‑defined control and estimation frameworks aligned with E/E architecture and safety goals.

  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership through architecture reviews, design trades, and escalation of complex technical issues.

  • Drive disciplined execution by translating technical strategy into clear plans, milestones, and deliverables, and proactively removing technical and organizational obstacles.

  • Collaborate closely with software, calibration, validation, systems, and program teams to align requirements, interfaces, and delivery commitments.

  • Champion design‑first and model‑based development practices to improve development speed, quality, and integration readiness.

  • Develop engineering talent through coaching, feedback, and career development, fostering strong technical judgment, ownership, and influence.

  • Cultivate a high‑performance, psychologically safe team culture grounded in accountability, continuous improvement, and GM Core Values.

  • Communicate technical status, risks, and architectural decisions clearly to senior leadership to enable timely decision‑making.

  • Model and foster GM's Core Values and Winning Behaviors

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Master of Science degree in Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field.

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional engineering experience, with at least 5 years focused on control systems, vehicle dynamics, embedded controls, and/or safety‑critical system development.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering management or technical team leadership experience, including responsibility for coaching, performance management, and delivery accountability.

  • Strong foundation in control theory and dynamic system modeling, with hands‑on experience designing, developing, and validating control and estimation algorithms.

  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced control and estimation techniques, such as adaptive control, model‑predictive control (MPC), and learning‑based control or estimation methods.

  • Experience using industry‑standard control design frameworks and libraries, including model‑based development environments.

  • Proficiency in programming for control and embedded applications, using languages such as C/C++, Python, and similar object‑oriented or scripting languages.

  • Demonstrated technical background in chassis control systems and/or vehicle dynamics, including integration and on‑vehicle validation.

  • Proven track record of successful technical project delivery, from concept through implementation and deployment.

  • Strong cross‑functional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to align and influence multiple engineering and non‑engineering teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle ambiguity, apply engineering judgment, and drive timely, data‑informed decisions.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate development and test vehicles as required.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • PhD in Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or a related technical degree

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional engineering experience, with at least 7 years focused on control systems, vehicle dynamics, embedded controls, and/or safety‑critical system development.Experience in chassis controls product development

  • Leadership experience developing or applying industry standards

  • Experience with safety compliance of embedded systems

  • Leadership of teams of engineers responsible for developing or testing embedded control systems or related hardware in an agile environment

  • Demonstrated ability to: achieve results through effective teamwork, lead numerous projects with different focal areas to successful completion, and manage and measure work through metrics, data, and results

  • Experience managing a geographically dispersed team

  • Experience in chassis controls product development, from algorithm design through vehicle integration.

  • Leadership experience developing or influencing industry standards or engineering best practices.

  • Experience with functional safety and compliance for embedded control systems.

  • Proven leadership of agile engineering teams developing or testing embedded control systems and/or related hardware.

  • Experience applying Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)

  • Hands‑on experience with embedded controls development and collaboration tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink, ETAS toolchains, Git‑based workflows, Jira/Jama, and requirements or configuration management systems.

  • Strong track record of delivering results across multiple technical initiatives using metrics, data, and effective teamwork.
