The Role
In pursuit of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM’s Global Manufacturing Engineering team is transforming how manufacturing systems are designed and launched for future propulsion products. As the DK68 Global Block Machining Lead Engineer, you will serve as the global technical authority for cylinder block machining on the DK68 diesel engine program. You will lead process development, standardization, and continuous improvement from concept through plant handover and sustainment, ensuring safety, quality, cost, and timing targets are achieved across production sites. This role partners daily with Product Engineering, Plant Engineering, Quality, Controls, suppliers, and launch execution teams in a global, matrixed environment.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the global DK68 cylinder block machining scope through process design, equipment installation, tryout, run-off, production validation, plant handover, and sustainment.
- Establish and maintain global process standards, including process flows, routings, Bills of Process, Bills of Equipment, Statements of Requirements, sequence of operations, error-proofing, nonconforming-material handling, and backup-process strategies.
- Drive cross-site harmonization of tooling, cutting parameters, fixturing, gaging, cycle times, automation, and advanced machining technologies across DK68 manufacturing locations.
- Lead safety reviews, ergonomic evaluations, Safety Observation Tours, PFMEA and Control Plan development, capability studies, and validation activities for new and modified machining processes.
- Own technical resolution of machining-related ECRs, PPDRs, supplier quality rejections, dimensional nonconformances, process excursions, and quality escapes using structured problem-solving methods.
- Direct OEMs and machining equipment suppliers through design, build, debug, run-off, and launch activities while ensuring throughput, quality, safety, ergonomic, cost, and timing requirements are met.
- Manage program timing, risks, issues, spending, purchase orders, invoices, capital assets, supplier evaluations, lessons learned, and technical knowledge transfer across global sites.
- Provide program updates to leadership and mentor machining engineers across the Global Propulsion Systems Manufacturing Engineering organization.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- At least 7 years of manufacturing or manufacturing engineering experience in a high-volume automotive or powertrain environment.
- Experience as a technical lead or subject matter expert for cylinder block, cylinder head, crankshaft, or equivalent high-precision machining processes.
- Working knowledge of block machining processes, equipment OEMs, tooling, fixturing, gaging, and automation systems.
- Demonstrated experience with ECR/ECN processes and cross-functional change management in a large automotive OEM environment.
- Experience developing and applying PFMEAs, Control Plans, PPAPs, and process capability analysis, including Cpk and Ppk.
- Strong technical problem-solving, communication, leadership, and influencing skills in a matrixed global organization.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and GM Global Manufacturing System principles.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience supporting large gas or diesel engine programs.
- Experience coordinating global or multi-site manufacturing engineering activities.
- Knowledge of GM product development, quality management processes, and manufacturing standards.
- Technical problem-solving experience using RedX, DMAIC, and/or Six Sigma certification.
- Familiarity with advanced machining technologies, including high-speed machining, precision boring, honing, and flexible manufacturing systems.
- Experience with Siemens NX, CATIA, or equivalent CAD/CAM platforms.
- Experience leading equipment sourcing, bid evaluations, supplier capability assessments, or capital equipment programs.
