Descripción
The Role
At General Motors, we are developing the embedded software and control systems that enable advanced vehicle performance, drivability, and system integration.
We are looking for a Transmission Control Software Engineer to support the development of control software for a new transmission for Performance Cars. In this role, you will design, implement, and integrate embedded software that manages transmission operation across a broad range of vehicle operating conditions.
You will work closely with software, systems, calibration, and platform teams to deliver high-quality controls solutions that are technically sound, maintainable, and consistent with GM software development standards and processes.
This is an individual contributor role for an engineer who can apply strong software and controls fundamentals, exercise independent judgment on moderate-scope technical problems, and contribute effectively within a cross-functional development team.
What You’ll Do
-
Develop and refine embedded software control functions for transmission operation, shift execution, torque management, diagnostics, and feature performance.
-
Translate system and algorithm requirements into software functional requirements, design content, implementation tasks, and verification activities.
-
Design, implement, and maintain software using C, MATLAB, Simulink, or comparable embedded controls toolchains.
-
Participate in software design, coding, peer reviews, and change-management activities in accordance with GM software development processes and coding standards.
-
Integrate transmission control software with vehicle-level and propulsion-system functions to support coordinated behavior and robust system performance.
-
Create and execute software verification activities, including unit, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, bench, and integration testing as appropriate.
-
Analyze software and controls issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions through development and software verification activities.
-
Collaborate with calibration, systems, integration, and architecture teams to resolve technical issues and deliver assigned features.
-
Communicate software design decisions, technical risks, issues, and recommended actions to project stakeholders.
-
Support continuous improvement in software reuse, documentation quality, test coverage, development processes, and adherence to GM engineering standards.
-
Provide technical support to teammates and share knowledge related to embedded software and transmission controls development.
-
Limited travel expectation (less than 20%)
Your Skills & Abilities ( Required Qualifications)
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
-
At least 2 years of experience in embedded software, controls development, or software systems engineering.
-
Experience developing or implementing software control algorithms using C, MATLAB, Simulink, or comparable embedded controls toolchains.
-
Understanding of transmission, propulsion, torque-management, driveline, or related vehicle controls in a hardware-software environment.
-
Experience translating requirements into software design, implementation, and verification content.
-
Experience troubleshooting technical issues using structured analysis and root-cause problem-solving methods.
-
Understanding of software quality attributes and disciplined development practices, including peer reviews, configuration management, and change management.
-
Ability to work independently within established processes, identify appropriate solutions to moderate-scope problems, and seek guidance when needed.
-
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams and communicate technical information clearly.
-
Ability to identify Root Causes
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Advanced degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline.
-
Experience with transmission controls, propulsion controls, or performance-oriented vehicle control systems.
-
Experience with vehicle controls, calibration, data logging, and embedded software development tools.
-
Familiarity with software architecture, diagnostics, functional safety, cybersecurity, or software-defined vehicle development.
-
Experience supporting feature integration across multiple controllers or subsystems.
-
Experience with Agile development, CICD, automated testing, or modern embedded software practices.
-
Experience with software verification on software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, bench, or vehicle platforms.
-
Familiarity with embedded control development tools such as INCA, VSpy, and Vector tools.
