Description
Why join us?
General Motors pioneers the innovations that move and connect people to what matters. We see a world with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. As we move toward this vision, software plays an integral role as it becomes more prominent in our vehicles.
The Role
As a Staff Product Manager for GM's next-generation in-vehicle experience (IVX), you will:
-
Own the end-to-end in-vehicle experience for GM’s luxury vehicle programs, and
-
Co-own key elements of the shared system UI platform in partnership with Platform PM.
You will lead the in-vehicle experience roadmap — defining what customers see, touch, and interact with across displays, center stacks, instrument clusters, and passenger entertainment surfaces.
You’ll be a senior individual contributor on a small, focused team reporting into the Director of Product Management, working alongside PMs who lead the platform foundation and other vehicle segments.
What You’ll Do
-
Segment Ownership - Luxury IVX
-
Own the IVX roadmap for GM's luxury programs, aligning brand strategy, customer needs, and platform capabilities.
-
Define product requirements that translate luxury brand intent into a cohesive, intuitive digital experience.
-
Develop the adaptation strategy across multiple display form factors, reducing unnecessary fragmentation.
-
Champion premium brand expression while staying grounded in usability and safety.
-
Define and track success metrics (instrumentation, analytics, customer satisfaction, adoption KPIs) for your vehicles and use them to drive iteration.
-
-
Platform Collaboration - Core System UI & Experience Architecture
-
Partner closely with the Platform PM for System UI to contribute to and validate system-wide requirements.
-
Provide requirements, constraints, and insights that help guide shared foundations used by other programs.
-
Advocate for platform consistency while ensuring the system can flex to express segment-specific needs appropriately.
-
-
Execution & Cross-Functional Leadership
-
Act as the product DRI for your luxury segment, driving cross-functional execution across Design, Engineering, Program Management, and Vehicle Program teams.
-
Represent your segment in leadership reviews and design deep dives.
-
Work within GM's vehicle development cadence, aligning content plans, design drops, and software milestones; identify and address risks across software and vehicle timelines.
-
Balance trade-offs between customer value, brand expression, technical feasibility, regulatory requirements, and platform strategy.
-
-
Customer Focus & Market Insight
-
Leverage customer research, market analysis, and competitive intelligence to shape the luxury IVX strategy - including emerging trends in personalization, voice interaction, driver-assistance UX, and display technology.
-
Represe nt the voice of the customer and the brand in cross-functional forums, influencing both segment design and platform evolution.
-
When data is missing, define learning plans (experiments, research, instrumentation) to inform decisions.
-
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
Core Product Management
-
7–10+ years of product management experience driving large-scale, complex software or connected products (e.g., consumer electronics, mobile OS, smart TV, IoT, automotive HMI, wearables).
-
Proven ability to own a product domain end-to-end — from early vision through launch and iteration — not just optimize a narrow feature.
-
Experience operating across the full PM stack for your domain: vision, strategy, roadmap, requirements, and delivery.
-
Strong prioritization and decision-making skills; adept at balancing near-term delivery with long-term platform and brand strategy.
-
-
Platform & Multi-Surface Experience
-
4–6+ years working on platform-level or multi-surface products that span multiple displays, form factors, or device types.
-
Solid understanding of how system-level UI frameworks, interaction models, and design systems enable consistent experiences across diverse hardware.
-
Comfort with hardware–software integration tradeoffs — display constraints, rendering performance, input modalities (touch, physical controls, voice), and responsive/adaptive layout challenges.
-
Experience contributing to content hierarchy, notification, or information architecture systems at scale.
-
-
Execution & Delivery
-
5–7+ years leading cross-functional delivery across engineering, design, program management, and operations in complex, fast-moving environments.
-
Track record shipping multi-surface or multi-product experiences from concept through launch and post-launch iteration.
-
Ability to navigate cross-team dependencies and drive alignment among vehicle, software, and platform stakeholders.
-
Skilled at resolving ambiguity through structured problem framing and clear trade-off discussions.
-
-
Customer Focus & Market Insight
-
4–6+ years leveraging customer research, market analysis, and competitive intelligence to define product strategy and inform prioritization.
-
Demonstrated ability to synthesize qualitative and quantitative insights into clear product direction and to set up measurement where it doesn’t yet exist.
-
Track record of representing the customer and brand perspective in shaping experience strategy and influencing design direction.
-
-
Communication & Leadership
-
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft clear, persuasive narratives for executive and cross-functional audiences.
-
Player-coach mentality within your scope — you are hands-on, collaborate deeply with designers and engineers, and help raise the bar for PM craft through reviews, pairing, and shared standards.
-
Entrepreneurial mindset — you thrive in ambiguity, create clarity, and build momentum, while grounding bold ideas in data and customer insight.
-
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Experience in automotive, consumer electronics, mobile OS, smart home/TV, or connected device ecosystems.
-
Familiarity with Android-based system platforms (AOSP, Android Automotive OS) or similar embedded OS environments.
-
Experience with premium or luxury brand products where craft, design quality, and brand expression are important.
-
Background in driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving UX, or data-driven personalization.
-
MBA or advanced technical degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, HCI).
-
Demonstrated ability to influence product practices beyond your immediate products (e.g., mentoring PMs, contributing to shared standards, leading cross-team initiatives).
