The Role

General Motors is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support Driveline Assembly operations in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this role, you will lead and support manufacturing engineering activities focused on safety, quality, throughput, cost, and continuous improvement within a fast-paced assembly environment.

This position is a Level 7 individual contributor level based on the selected candidate’s experience, technical depth, and demonstrated ability to lead problem solving and deliver results across the organization.

What You’ll Do

  • Support daily manufacturing engineering needs for driveline assembly operations, including troubleshooting equipment, process, tooling, quality, and material flow issues
  • Lead root cause problem solving for safety, quality, downtime, and throughput losses using structured methods and data-driven analysis
  • Develop, implement, and improve assembly processes to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to ergonomics, standardized work, scrap reduction, cycle time, and OEE
  • Partner with production, maintenance, quality, controls, materials, and launch teams to deliver robust manufacturing solutions
  • Lead and support equipment and process changes, including specification development, trials, validation, implementation, and start-up support
  • Establish and maintain process documentation, work instructions, PFMEA inputs, control plan updates, and standardized manufacturing practices
  • Analyze production and quality data to identify trends, prioritize issues, and recommend corrective actions
  • Support new product introductions, engineering changes, and model year changes within the assembly area
  • Ensure compliance with GM safety requirements, built-in quality expectations, and manufacturing standards
  • Provide technical guidance to operators, skilled trades, and less experienced engineers as needed

Additional Scope for Level 7

Candidates considered at Level 7 will be expected to operate with a higher degree of independence and broader influence, including:

  • Owning complex manufacturing issues with limited guidance
  • Leading cross-functional initiatives with broader operational impact
  • Driving implementation of non-standard or innovative process improvements
  • Serving as a technical resource and mentor for other engineers and team members

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5 yrs of experience in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, process engineering, or a related production environment
  • Experience supporting assembly operations, automated manufacturing systems, or high-volume production processes
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capability using structured methods and data analysis
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing safety, quality systems, process control, and continuous improvement principles
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across functions and organizational levels
  • Ability to work on-site in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in driveline, powertrain, transmission, axle, or other complex mechanical assembly environments
  • Experience with launch support, equipment integration, or process validation
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, standardized work, PFMEA, control plans, and error-proofing
  • Experience with PLC-controlled equipment, automation interfaces, and troubleshooting in a production setting
  • Experience using statistical tools, data visualization, and manufacturing performance metrics to drive decisions
  • Proven ability to lead continuous improvement projects with measurable results

What Will Differentiate a Strong Candidate

  • Strong technical ownership in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to balance urgent floor support with long-term process improvement
  • Sound judgment and a bias for action in resolving production issues
  • Capability to influence across teams and drive alignment on solutions
