Description
The Role:
We are looking for a Staff Display Hardware Design Engineer to lead the electrical design and technical execution of GM in-house display development programs and ensure that the display module meets system, regulatory, validation, and manufacturing requirements across the development lifecycle.
The engineer will work across LCD/OLED display platforms and variants, partnering with internal teams and suppliers to deliver robust designs.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on design owner who is equally comfortable reviewing circuits, aligning requirements, challenging supplier assumptions, and driving the engineering work needed to release a robust display product. They combine strong electrical fundamentals with practical execution in a fast-moving, cross-functional automotive environment.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Own the electrical hardware design for in-house display modules from concept through validation and release, including architecture definition, circuit design direction, and technical decision-making for multiple display variants.
- Develop and review schematics, BOMs, PCB layouts, and related design documentation , and ensure that the design content is aligned with GM requirements and milestone timing.
- Drive hardware design reviews and major technical reviews with internal stakeholders and suppliers, including EMC, high-speed interface, power sequencing, signal integrity, and power integrity reviews.
- Perform or direct design analysis such as worst-case analysis, tolerance studies, startup and sequencing analysis, thermal review, and circuit compliance checks to confirm that the design meets all electrical and functional requirements.
- Define and validate power architecture and power mode behavior , including low-voltage/cranking behavior, reset strategy, wake-up logic, parasitic current, and protection for reverse battery, jump start, shorts, and open circuits.
- Lead the design and integration of display electrical interfaces such as SERDES/deserializer links, eDP/OLDI/LVDS-class video paths, touch controller interfaces, MCU interfaces, or auxiliary I/O content where applicable.
- Partner with software, systems, mechanical, validation, quality, and supplier teams to resolve cross-functional integration issues , debug root causes, and deliver robust module performance at the component and vehicle levels.
- Support component selection and sourcing strategy for key semiconductors and display-related hardware, with attention to approved part lists, resiliency, supplier capability, and cost/performance trade-offs.
- Ensure the design is ready for DV/PV validation , including ADVP&R alignment, test planning, diagnostic coverage, failure detection strategy, and compliance with GM and regulatory requirements.
- Create and maintain technical artifacts such as DFMEA, open issue tracking, interface definitions, design reports, lessons learned, and release-ready engineering documentation .
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- 10+ years of proven experience in automotive display electronics or adjacent embedded hardware, with ownership of module or subsystem design from concept through validation.
- Strong background in hardware architecture, schematic design, PCB development, and design analysis for embedded electronic modules.
- Experience leading or supporting DFMEA, worst-case analysis, signal integrity, EMC, and technical design reviews.
- Ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams to define interfaces, review designs, solve issues, and drive technical decisions to closure.
- Familiarity with validation, environmental, durability, and regulatory requirements for automotive electronic components and displays.
- Experience using Mentor Graphics tools for schematic capture, design review, and PCB development workflows.
- Experience with EMC-conscious design practices and hands-on support for EMC testing, debugging, and issue resolution.
Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.
The expected base compensation for this role is: $160,000 - $245,000. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
