The Role:
General Motors is committed to achieving a future with ZERO Crashes, ZERO Emissions, and ZERO Congestion. As a Sub-System Lead Engineer focused on High Voltage Battery Management Systems and embedded vehicle mechatronics controls, you will drive innovation in the complex field of Battery State Estimation . In this role, you will optimize system performance to enable GM Electrification Programs to deliver safe, accurate, and efficient battery performance for our customers.
The Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) is a highly skilled individual contributor recognized for their expertise across the entire vehicle development lifecycle. This role encompasses responsibilities such as requirements definition, design and implementation, testing, and problem resolution. Proficiency in agile methodologies, systems engineering, requirements management, and embedded controls development and calibration is highly desirable. A strong motivation to grow both technically and professionally—combined with a “Requirements First” mindset and a strong sense of ownership while contributing to some of General Motors’ most innovative features—is essential for success in this role.
What You'll Do:
-
Collaborate with Functional System Architect (FSA) to align on requirements structure and intent.
-
Define and develop software requirements based on strong embedded software expertise, ensuring hardware abstraction while maintaining alignment with the underlying hardware architecture.
-
Compile, sustain, and manage extensive documentation like context diagram, state diagram, system integration, Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS), and Behavioral Test Specifications (BTS) for the defined subsystems.
-
Follow Behavioral Driven Development (BDD) principles focusing on requirements development with behavioral impacts to customer in mind.
-
Direct and evolve subsystem design with uniform solutions across diverse vehicle architectures (including SDV 2.0) to reduce complexity.
-
Lead Triad Meetings and discussions with key stakeholders to develop behavioral requirements and “Given / When / Then” scenarios.
-
Undertake a comprehensive subsystem analysis including Noise factors, Interface mapping, and actuator and sensor performance requirements.
-
Lead initiatives in crafting and finalizing Subsystem DFMEAs, ensuring coherent linkage to component and system DFMEAs, and manage FMEA processes across applicable subsystems.
-
Support the development of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) requirements and define API capabilities for the Battery State Estimation component.
-
Support Testable Functionality Roll-Out Plan (TFRP) definition.
-
Support development of Regulatory (global), Safety, and Calibration requirements as applicable.
-
Leverage simulation environments and plant models to support testing and requirements development.
-
Collaborate with Controls and Software Engineers to review controls design and/or software implementation, ensuring compliance with requirements.
-
Engage in root cause analysis for all applicable sub-system related issues, translating solutions into new or revised requirements for high voltage battery systems.
-
Participate as a key stakeholder in agile software development by actively contributing to regular Scrum ceremonies and driving software-related requirements.
-
Support peripheral meetings with Product Team Members, FSAs, other SSLEs, and Systems Engineers.
-
Support advanced technical initiatives that drive future features and vehicle enhancements, while contributing to additional responsibilities as needed.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, or a related engineering field.
-
5+ years of relevant experience.

Strong expertise in embedded software development, complemented by a deep understanding of battery systems, enabling effective navigation of complex hardware-software interactions.
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, including sound independent judgment and decision-making, complemented by excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
-
Demonstrated project management expertise, with the ability to mentor and develop others.
-
Effectively communicate issues, progress, and recommendations to leadership stakeholders.
-
Prioritize and manage work independently with minimal direction from management.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
-
Masters or PhD in Engineering with an emphasis on Controls.
-
8+ years of relevant experience.
-
Proficient in electric and hybrid vehicle operating strategy execution, with strong expertise in high-voltage battery management systems.
-
Experience with calibration, software, and controls development.
-
Experience leveraging simulation environments and plant modeling for testing or requirements generation (MATLAB/Simulink, ETAS, etc.).
-
Experience with requirements management tools (Doors NG, etc.).
-
Experience with change management tools (Jira, etc.).
-
Experience with OBD regulatory requirements and safety-critical systems, including compliance with ISO 26262 standards.
