Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role:
As the Staff Product Manager for the gmUI1 Experience Platform, you'll sit at the center of one of GM's most complex and high-visibility product efforts, owning the experience strategy for an in-vehicle UI platform that touches millions of customers across multiple vehicle programs and display configurations.
This role is ideal for someone who is hands-on, highly collaborative, and comfortable with ambiguity, and who enjoys working across multiple teams to solve customer and business problems.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):
-
Collate and shepherd individual product visions and strategies into an overall experience roadmap for the gmUI1 Experience Platform across all display configurations and vehicle programs, ensuring it supports GM’s broader customer, business, and technology goals.
-
Serve as the product DRI for gmUI1 and its iterations (UI1.x) - aligning portfolio, program, and cross-pillar priorities for launches, continuous improvement, and updates/upgrades.
-
Collaborate and facilitate cross-product prioritization across all product pillars within the product organization. Lead the UI1 cross-product backlog (waterline and 100% scope) by turning scattered features into a coherent roadmap and managing tradeoffs with HID and engineering based on resource constraints.
-
Be accountable for ensuring the solutions we prioritize and ultimately ship on gmUI1 are both valuable (customers love them) and viable (they support GM’s business goals, technical capabilities, and regulatory constraints).
-
Partner with the System UI Product Manager in facilitating framework and experience working sessions with other product teams and HMI design to integrate their hero use cases into the gmUI1 system framework and inform PRDs.
-
Manage a collective scorecard designed to inform the larger team of gmUI’s performance to stated KPIs and measures. Partner closely with product, vehicle, design, and engineering teams to align on the appropriate measures and frequency of reporting.
-
Act as the center of gravity for UI1 demos and reviews , translating CXR, quality, and usability feedback into targeted iterations for continuous improvement
-
Be the product point person for summative research that helps us understand how customers engage with gmUI1. Work closely with marketing and user research teams to build and manage a high-level research roadmap for gmUI1. Ensure resulting data and insights inform future prioritization.
-
Act as the single threaded owner for gmUI1, aligning partners across design, engineering, architecture, privacy, legal, safety, marketing, and brands as needed.
-
Ability to travel - up to 10%
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
-
7+ years working on technology-powered products (e.g., automotive, consumer apps, platforms, or enterprise software) as a Product Manager or in a closely related role (product, design, engineering, data, UX research). Some in-vehicle experience is a MUST.
-
Demonstrated experience planning and executing vehicle software products or features end-to-end, from discovery through launch and iteration.
Product skills
-
Demonstrated understanding of modern product discovery and delivery techniques (e.g., hypothesis-driven development, experimentation, dual-track discovery/delivery).
-
Proven ability to break down complex, ambiguous problems with many constraints and propose clear, data-informed solutions.
-
Ability to define product success metrics, analyze outcomes, and adjust course based on data and customer feedback.
Collaboration and leadership
-
Proven ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with engineering, design, program management, and cross-functional partners.
-
Comfortable leading cross-functional initiatives, managing dependencies, and resolving conflicts across teams.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft concise narratives for leadership.
Business and customer understanding
-
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn multiple functional areas (e.g., engineering, design, finance, marketing, operations) and incorporate business constraints into product decisions.
-
Deep curiosity about customer behavior and experience; habit of using data and research to inform prioritization.
What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)
-
Experience with connected vehicles, or complex hardware–software systems (e.g., IoT, consumer electronics).
-
Prior work on core platforms, infrastructure, or frameworks used by multiple product teams.
-
Familiarity with GM’s Software & Services Product Management practices, PRD templates, and portfolio/roadmap processes.
-
Experience with Confluence , Figma , and other planning software tools
-
Vehicle software flash coordination, fleet prep, and MPG driving access
