The Role
As an Automation Test Technician , you will help keep vehicle test operations safe, reliable, and ready to execute, ensuring the quality and reliability of software features across the full vehicle. You will provide hands-on support for vehicle instrumentation, electrical hardware, wiring, and test setups. Working with test engineers, scripters and cross-functional partners, you will install and remove test equipment, perform vehicle module swaps, troubleshoot hardware, create custom equipment and wiring, and maintain tools and kits.
This role combines hands-on vehicle and hardware work, test readiness, and practical troubleshooting to contribute to the successful delivery of high-impact software across GM's vehicle programs.
What You’ll Do

Maintain safe, organized, and test-ready vehicles, equipment, and work areas.

Complete daily first-in quality checks and promptly communicate hazards, issues, and readiness concerns.

Build, modify, repair, and troubleshoot wiring harnesses, custom hardware, and connectors.

Perform component re-work, electrical diagnostics, module swaps, and related corrective actions.

Install and remove instrumentation, sensors, datalogging equipment, and other test hardware.

Support engineers through test setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, execution, and teardown.

Maintain accurate inventory and good working condition of tools, equipment, kits, parts, and consumables.

Document configurations, issues, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and completion status.

Communicate clearly, demonstrate accountability, and identify opportunities to improve readiness, standard work, and technician workflows.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
Relevant hands-on experience in automotive testing, vehicle service, electrical diagnostics, manufacturing, equipment maintenance, or a related technical field.

Ability to follow safety requirements, procedures, work instructions, and quality standards.
-
Ability to read and apply wiring diagrams, schematics, connector information, and technical documentation.

Experience using hand tools, power tools, electrical diagnostic equipment, and shop or test equipment.

Ability to troubleshoot hardware and electrical issues using a logical, methodical approach.

Strong attention to detail when installing, routing, securing, labeling, inspecting, and removing vehicle hardware.

Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Demonstrates integrity, accountability, professionalism, and a commitment to safe, high-quality work.

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate test vehicles as required.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

Experience supporting vehicle integration, validation, durability, prototype, or software test operations.

Experience building or repairing wiring harnesses, custom electrical hardware, connectors, or test fixtures.

Experience with soldering, component re-work, crimping, pinning, depinning, continuity checks, or insulation checks.

Experience installing and troubleshooting vehicle sensors, instrumentation, dataloggers, network hardware, or related test equipment.

Experience performing module swaps, functional checks, or post-installation verification.
-
Familiarity with Vehicle Spy, INCA, or similar automotive diagnostic and data tools.
-
Experience with inventory control, calibration tracking, preventive maintenance, organized shop practices, or continuous improvement.

Technical certificate, associate degree, military technical training, or comparable hands-on experience.
