Description

Job Description:

The Power Electronics/RESS Electrical Architecture team at General Motors is responsible for defining and delivering industry-leading power electronics architectures for future Battery Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles. The team serves as a strategic technical authority in delivering GM's vision of Zero Emissions, Zero Crashes, and Zero Congestion.

As a technical leader within the Power Electronics/RESS Electrical Architecture team, you will define and deliver component architecture strategies for a designated power electronics product area, including Traction Inverters, Accessory Power Modules (APM), On-Board Charging Modules (OBCM), and Battery Disconnect Units (BDU/X-in-1). You will establish technical direction, lead subsystem and system architecture decisions, and ensure disciplined execution across new product programs. You will drive architecture choices, resolve complex cross-functional trade-offs, and develop scalable solutions that improve safety, quality, cost, performance, timing, manufacturability, and customer value across GM.

Additional Job Description:

This role operates across multiple vehicle programs and functional organizations and is expected to influence technical outcomes beyond a single program team. The Power Electronics/RESS Electrical Architect establishes the technical framework within which component-level decisions are made, drives alignment between stakeholders, and remains accountable for the long-term consequences of architecture choices.

Responsibilities:

·        Own the architecture strategy, technical roadmap, design principles, and interface definitions for a designated power electronics component portfolio (Inverter, APM, OBCM, or BDU/X-in-1).

·        Lead power electronics new product programs through the Balanced Architecture (BA) or Advanced Technology Work (ATW) phase with accountability for technical integrity, architecture maturity, gate readiness, cross-functional alignment, and closure of critical technical risks.

·        Serve as the primary technical authority for component architecture decisions; lead trade-offs across safety, efficiency, power density, cost, weight, thermal performance, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, and customer value.

·        Define subsystem and system-level architectures including electrical topologies, semiconductor technologies, cooling approaches, controls interfaces, packaging concepts, and scalability strategies.

·        Partner with Systems Engineering, Controls, Software, Hardware, Vehicle Integration, Manufacturing, Validation, and Supplier teams to ensure architecture decisions are effectively implemented and validated.

·        Drive design reuse, commonality, modularity, and standardization across multiple vehicle programs to maximize portfolio value and reduce future development effort.

·        Lead complex technical studies, competitive benchmarking activities, and architecture trade analyses that inform future product strategies, technology selections, and investment priorities.

·        Establish and continuously improve component architecture standards, design guidelines, interface specifications, decision frameworks, and technical governance processes.

·        Act as the primary technical liaison between the Power Electronics Architecture team and program leadership, presenting recommendations, alternatives, assumptions, risks, and business impacts to support key decisions.

·        Anticipate emerging technology, regulatory, semiconductor, supplier, manufacturing, cybersecurity, functional safety, and field performance risks; develop mitigation plans before they impact program commitments.

·        Mentor engineers while building a strong architecture community that consistently delivers high-quality engineering decisions.

Requirements:

·        Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

·        8+ years of new product engineering experience, including significant responsibility for power electronics systems, architecture, integration, controls, or hardware development.

·        Proven track record of delivering multiple complex automotive power electronics products from concept through launch with sustained safety, quality, cost, performance, and timing results.

·        Deep technical expertise in one or more power electronics product domains including Traction Inverters, OBCMs, APMs, BDUs, DC-DC converters, charging systems, or related high-voltage vehicle systems.

·        Demonstrated ability to lead subsystem and system-level architecture development, interface definition, and cross-functional integration efforts.

·        Strong understanding of power conversion topologies, wide-bandgap semiconductors, controls integration, thermal management, EMC, HV safety, electrical protection, and reliability engineering.

·        Demonstrated ability to make high-consequence technical decisions using first principles, systems thinking, quantitative analysis, and documented assumptions.

·        Strong communication and technical leadership skills with the ability to influence engineering teams, suppliers, and leadership without direct authority.

·        Experience creating and deploying architecture standards, interface specifications, technical guidelines, design reviews, and engineering decision frameworks.

·        Proven ownership of critical technical risk management across safety, reliability, quality, cost, performance, timing, supplier, and manufacturing concerns.

·        Demonstrated ability to mentor/develop engineers while strengthening technical capability across organization.

·        Evidence of cross-program impact through improved commonality, architecture reuse, launch readiness, technical quality, or measurable business outcomes.

Desired Skills:

·        Master of Science in Engineering or equivalent advanced technical education.

·        10+ years of power electronics product development, systems engineering, or architecture leadership experience.

·        In-depth understanding of GM's existing power electronics designs, propulsion systems, charging systems, electrical architectures, and lessons learned from launch and field performance.

·        Strong knowledge of competitive power electronics technologies, supplier capabilities, semiconductor roadmaps, charging standards, regulatory requirements, and emerging industry trends.

·        Hands-on experience with high-voltage power electronics systems and demonstrated understanding of vehicle integration, manufacturing, service, validation, and customer experience impacts.

·        Experience leading architecture reviews, technical communities of practice, standards deployment, or cross-program engineering initiatives.

·        Demonstrated success translating emerging technologies and competitive benchmarking insights into differentiated production-ready product solutions.

·        Experience supporting vertically integrated or Build-to-Print product development models.

·       Professional publications, patents, innovation awards, or recognized technical contributions in power electronics or electrified propulsion systems.
