GM has the global reach to bring cutting-edge advances to everyday drivers at unprecedented scale. Join us to help deliver the next generation of safe and delightful personal autonomous vehicle experiences.
About the Organization
The Evaluation organization builds the platforms, frameworks, and engineering systems that enable the development, testing, and validation of GM’s autonomous driving technology. We partner across Autonomy, Simulation, Systems and Test Engineering, Embodied AI, and Release organizations to turn large-scale road and simulation data into actionable insights and confident engineering decisions. The Evaluation Frameworks team develops and operates the analytical frameworks that transform autonomous vehicle data into trustworthy metrics. Our tools support simulation analysis, road-event monitoring, data mining, model and feature evaluation, and release de-risking across the AV development lifecycle. The team owns shared capabilities including metrics authoring APIs, simulation-analysis orchestration, data augmentation and miner frameworks, road and simulation execution pipelines, and health monitoring for the resulting data products. We are focused on making metrics development faster, more reliable, and more accessible to engineering and evaluation teams.
We are looking for a Manager to lead the Metrics Frameworks team. This role combines people leadership, technical strategy, and execution ownership. You will set the team’s direction, build a high-performing engineering organization, and guide the design and operation of platforms that are critical to AV evaluation and development. The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader who can move comfortably between long-term technical strategy and day-to-day execution. You will work closely with customers and partner teams to understand evolving evaluation needs, make clear tradeoffs, and deliver durable framework capabilities that improve engineering velocity and confidence in AV performance data.
What You’ll Do
-
Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing team of software and data engineers through hiring, onboarding, career development, feedback, and performance management.
-
Define and communicate the team’s technical vision, roadmap, priorities, and operating plan in partnership with Evaluation and broader AV leadership.
-
Own delivery of scalable frameworks for creating, executing, and monitoring metrics across simulated and real-world driving data.
-
Ensure the team’s platforms are reliable, observable, performant, maintainable, and easy for internal customers to use.
-
Establish meaningful service-level objectives, health metrics, dashboards, and operational practices for critical data and analysis pipelines.
-
Balance feature delivery, platform modernization, technical debt, operational support, and long-term architecture investments.
-
Partner with both internal and external stakeholders to translate ambiguous needs into clear technical plans and measurable outcomes.
-
Raise the engineering bar through strong architecture, design reviews, testing, code review, documentation, security, and operational excellence.
-
Develop mechanisms that help teams distinguish framework ownership from metric-specific business logic, enabling effective collaboration and clear accountability.
-
Participate in and improve the team’s production-support and incident-response practices for critical metrics and data pipelines.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
-
8+ years of experience building software, data platforms, analytics infrastructure, or evaluation systems in a production environment.
-
3+ years of experience directly managing and developing engineers or other technical professionals.
-
Experience setting technical direction and delivering a roadmap for a platform, framework, or infrastructure product used by multiple teams.
-
Experience building or operating scalable data-processing pipelines, workflow systems, developer tooling, or distributed services.
-
Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including system design, testing, code review, observability, and performance tradeoffs.
-
Experience using data and operational metrics to improve reliability, prioritization, and execution.
-
Ability to translate complex technical problems and ambiguous customer needs into clear priorities and decisions.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence across organizational boundaries.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, simulation, advanced driver-assistance systems, or another safety-critical and data-intensive domain.
-
Experience evaluating complex systems using statistical, numerical, machine learning, or time-series methods.
-
Experience with metrics platforms, data quality systems, experiment analysis, telemetry, or performance monitoring.
-
Proficiency with Python, C++, and SQL in production engineering environments.
-
Experience with large-scale analytical data stores such as BigQuery, Databricks, or similar technologies.
-
Experience with workflow orchestration, batch processing, cloud infrastructure, and data-pipeline operations.
-
Familiarity with simulation, sensor data, road testing, or evaluation of perception, prediction, planning, or control systems.
-
Experience leading platform migrations, reducing technical debt, or consolidating fragmented frameworks.
-
Demonstrated ability to build trust with technical and non-technical partners and create clarity in a rapidly changing environment.
Compensation : The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.
-
The salary range for this role is ($218,800 - $335,300). The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
-
Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
Company Vehicle : Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
