The Role
The Data Engineering organization at General Motors is building a unified Vehicle Data Platform that moves data and configuration between vehicle ECUs and the cloud. Our team is the only team within General Motors that delivers software on every compute module the company has. Our software is delivered as libraries, apps, and services on Android, Linux, and QNX and covers four areas. The control plane retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs. The data plane collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage. The SDK lets application teams use the platform. The unified logging infrastructure manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team that owns one or more of these areas. You will hire and develop engineers, make architecture decisions with the team, and own the software through release and field support. You will work with application, platform, cloud, cybersecurity, and privacy teams to deliver software on production ECUs with limited CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
- Lead, hire, and develop a team of software engineers. Set goals, give feedback, and manage performance and career growth.
- Own delivery of the software in your team's areas, which can include the control plane, the data plane, the SDK, and the unified logging infrastructure, across Android, Linux, and QNX, from planning through release and field support.
- Set technical direction for your team's areas and for the integration between the control plane (configuration, arbitration, lifecycle) and the data plane (streaming data and file based transfer), and make architecture and design decisions with the team.
- Stay involved in the code through design work, code and test case reviews, and prototyping as needed.
- Hold the team to standards for reliability, performance, data privacy, and resource use on production ECUs.
- Define and scale engineering practices across the Data Platform organization, including software verification (unit and integration testing), documentation per the software development process, and release criteria.
- Work with application teams and product stakeholders to define the roadmap for your team's areas based on their needs and on fleet data requirements.
- Partner with platform, cloud, DevOps, cybersecurity, and privacy teams to roll out new software and configuration and to drive integration, alignment, and adoption of the Data Platform and data governance policy.
- Report status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership and partner teams.
- Own operational accountability for the software in production: define health metrics, lead incident response, and drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Mentor engineers and grow technical leads within the team.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years in software development or systems engineering across Android, Linux, and/or QNX.
- 2+ years managing software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
- Coding proficiency in C, C++, and/or Java/Kotlin for Android, with experience in platform level integrations.
- Experience delivering software on production ECUs or other devices with limited CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth.
- Experience with at least one of the following: control plane or fleet management software, data collection and transfer pipelines, logging or telemetry software, or SDKs and libraries used by other teams.
- Experience designing telemetry for operational visibility and remote control at fleet scale.
- Experience scaling data flows from ECU to cloud.
- Track record of delivering critical software with requirements for reliability, performance, and data privacy.
- Experience leading technical initiatives across teams, including teams outside your reporting line.
- Technical communication and design documentation skills, with the ability to present status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience building a new team, including defining roles, hiring, and setting team processes.
- Experience delivering SDKs or libraries used by other engineering teams, including API design, versioning, and adoption support.
- Experience integrating with or building control plane services (configuration retrieval, arbitration, persistence and fallback) and data plane pipelines (streaming and file based transfer).
- Experience building fleet management, OTA, or remote configuration systems.
- Experience developing software observability and logging components.
- Experience designing driver or HMI initiated capture flows, such as create and upload data.
- Knowledge of automotive cybersecurity controls and data protection processes.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their device management services (IoT Hub, IoT Core, Pub/Sub, or equivalent).
- Exposure to OpenTelemetry, protobuf, gRPC, or similar observability and data plane technologies.
- Contributions to or affinity for open source observability, logging, and data pipeline ecosystems, such as Fluent Bit.
- Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, failure and crash analysis.
