Description
General Motors is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation. Our Cybersecurity team, part of our Global Enterprise IT org, is on the forefront of this work, emboldening our culture by seeking out determined, innovative individuals who will join our team to help move us forward and achieve our mission.
The Role
The Senior Cybersecurity Engineer - GRC Engineering & Technical Controls is responsible for advancing enterprise cybersecurity risk management, regulatory compliance, and control assurance through a combination of governance expertise and engineering-driven solutions. This role designs, implements, and operates technical control frameworks, conducts risk and compliance assessments, and partners with engineering teams to implement, validate, and continuously monitor security controls across enterprise, cloud, connected vehicle, and operational technology environments. The position leads GRC engineering initiatives focused on automating and scaling governance, risk, and compliance capabilities, including Continuous Control Monitoring (CCM), Compliance-as-Code, Policy-as-Code, automated evidence collection, control validation, workflow orchestration, and AI-enabled governance processes. The engineer translates regulatory, contractual, cybersecurity, privacy, and vehicle cybersecurity requirements into actionable technical controls and measurable assurance activities, while driving integration between GRC platforms, security technologies, cloud services, and enterprise systems.
The ideal candidate combines strong cybersecurity, risk, compliance, and engineering expertise with the ability to bridge business, compliance, product, and technology teams. This individual will help modernize control assurance through automation, analytics, and AI-driven workflows, delivering scalable, data-driven risk, compliance, and governance capabilities that support enterprise objectives and global regulatory requirements.
Scope & Responsibilities
1. GRC Engineering, Automation & Systems Architecture
· API & Data Pipeline Engineering: Architect, build, and maintain data pipelines and middleware connecting GRC platforms with cloud environments, CMDBs, IAM tools, vulnerability scanners, and CI/CD pipelines.
· Automated Evidence Collection: Develop custom connectors, automation scripts, and API-integrated workflows to automate controls testing and evidence gathering, reducing manual audit burdens.
· Policy-as-Code Development: Standardize and codify security policies into machine-readable formats. Implement guardrails using cloud-native policy engines and automated infrastructure-as-code checking tools.
· Continuous Control Monitoring (CCM): Define, design, and configure automated verification routines to monitor control effectiveness in near real-time, instantly flagging configuration drifts or compliance gaps.
2. AI Governance & Agentic Workflows
· AI-Driven GRC Orchestration: Develop and orchestrate AI-driven GRC workflows and agentic capabilities to automate complex risk assessments, control validation, and evidence classification.
· Automated Decision Support: Design and integrate AI agents and LLM-powered pipelines with GRC platforms to streamline policy parsing, generate automated compliance scorecards, and provide intelligent remediation recommendations.
3. Regulatory Compliance & Unified Controls Framework
· Regulatory Translation: Interpret complex global, regional, and industry-specific regulations (including privacy and automotive standards) and translate them into actionable, engineering-focused technical control standards.
· Unified Controls Mapping: Maintain bidirectional traceability within a Unified Controls Framework (UCF) mapping regulatory obligations to common engineering requirements (e.g., NIST CSF, NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, SOC 2, and vehicle cybersecurity regulations like ISO/SAE 21434, UN R155/R156).
· Defensible Control Validation: Conduct scheduled, event-driven, and automated technical audits to validate that control implementations meet rigorous regulatory and certification standards.
4. GRC Platform Administration & Dashboard Telemetry
· Functional Platform Ownership: Serve as the technical administrator and authority for the enterprise GRC / Integrated Risk Management (IRM) platform. Configure advanced workflows, relational schemas, and API access.
· Metric & Telemetry Engineering: Establish and aggregate automated compliance telemetry (e.g., control coverage, deficiency aging, and real-time posture indicators) into actionable executive-level dashboards.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
· Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience operating in a highly technical security environment, with a strong focus on GRC engineering, security engineering, IT compliance, or DevSecOps.
· Engineering & Scripting Acumen: Strong hands-on programming experience with Python, Go, PowerShell, or Bash to build integrations, handle data parsing, and interface with APIs.
· AI & Agentic Solutions: Hands-on experience or deep conceptual knowledge of leveraging AI agents, LLM APIs, and workflow orchestration frameworks to automate security and compliance tasks.
· Policy-as-Code & DevOps: Solid understanding of Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure governance tools. Familiarity with Policy-as-Code concepts.
· Framework & Compliance Expertise: Strong practical knowledge of major industry security frameworks (such as NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, or SOC 2) and experience translating regulatory/certification requirements into technical controls.
· Technical Environment Acumen: Practical knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP), modern IAM models, vulnerability management architectures, and containerized deployments.
Preferred Qualifications
· Advanced Compliance-as-Code: Direct experience building and implementing machine-readable compliance, automated controls testing, policy engine integration, or continuous assurance programs.
· Automated Guardrails & Configuration Drift: Experience designing, configuring, and maintaining automated guardrails, automated evidence collection routines, and configuration drift detection in production environments.
· Specialized Regulatory Frameworks: Prior experience adapting unified control structures to map to complex automotive, vehicle safety, or international privacy standards.
· Advanced GRC Platform Architecture: Prior experience customizing and deep-configuring market-leading GRC/IRM platforms via custom APIs, database schemas, and workflows.
Professional Certifications:
· Required: Holds at least one active, industry-recognized professional certification in risk, audit, or security engineering (e.g., CISSP, CRISC, CISA, or CGRC).
· Desired: Cloud or automation-focused technical certifications (e.g., CCSP, AWS Certified Security – Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate, or GIAC Cloud Security Automation).
