Description

On-site: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis.

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role:
This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Advanced Battery Cell Engineering team at the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC).  The WBCIC is GM’s engineering and pilot-development facility for designing, building, and validating next-generation battery cells and manufacturing processes.  The Senior Advanced Battery Cell Engineer will work with advanced battery chemistries and cell formats, contribute to cell and component design, and partner with build engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to develop and mature next-generation prismatic cell processes.

The ideal candidate is passionate about automotive battery cell technologies, comfortable working directly on equipment and hardware, and able to move between hands-on execution and technical leadership.  You will be responsible for setting up and running trials, analyzing results, resolving issues, documenting learnings, and presenting recommendations to internal and external audiences.

This is a hands-on engineering role with work in our advanced laboratory and pilot-manufacturing environments. You will personally plan and execute cell build process trials, equipment evaluations, and failure investigations. You will work directly with cell-assembly equipment, fixtures, tooling, materials, instrumentation, and automation to turn advanced cell concepts into repeatable processes.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead advanced battery cell build process development projects, within blanking, stacking, welding, packaging, and related assembly operations, for next-generation prismatic cells.
  • Plan, set up, run, and document cell builds, experiments, process trials, and equipment evaluations in laboratory, dry-room, and pilot-line environments.
  • Work directly with equipment, fixtures, tooling, controls, automation, materials, and instrumentation to troubleshoot issues and improve process performance.
  • Partner with technicians to establish practical work methods and ensure processes are safe, consistent, and repeatable.
  • Lead targeted development studies and trials to evaluate process parameters, material interactions, equipment performance, and the impact of cell build conditions on cell quality and performance.
  • Develop cell-build strategies for new architectures, materials, and assembly concepts, emphasizing robustness, weld integrity, stack quality, dimensional control, and manufacturability.
  • Define development-phase process requirements, engineering guidelines, work instructions, equipment concepts, tooling, controls, automation, and success criteria.
  • Build strategic project plans that support advanced cell engineering objectives, process maturation, equipment readiness, and the introduction of new cell build approaches.
  • Stay informed on emerging battery manufacturing technologies and industry trends in cell stacking, welding, automation, and advanced assembly, and apply relevant insights to internal development goals.
  • Communicate technical updates and recommendations clearly to stakeholders, summarize key learnings, and escalate critical risks, capability gaps, equipment issues, or integration concerns that may affect timing or outcomes.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related Science Degree
  • 5+ years of experience in battery cells, battery manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, or a closely related field
  • Experience developing or improving manufacturing processes using structured experimentation, data analysis, and root-cause problem solving
  • Demonstrated experience personally executing process-development work on equipment, at a build station, in a laboratory, or in a pilot-line environment
  • Ability to create and interpret process requirements, equipment concepts, technical reports, and validation plans
  • Persuasive communication and presentation skills

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master’s Degree, PhD, or other advanced certifications
  • Hands-on experience with battery cell assembly and manufacturing
  • Experience with battery cell blanking, stacking, welding, packaging, equipment bring-up, commissioning, or process qualification.
  • Experience with automation, machine vision, robotics, PLC-controlled equipment, or data acquisition systems
  • Exposure to manufacturing quality systems and structured problem-solving methods
  • Understanding of working in dry-rooms, clean manufacturing, or controlled-environment operations
