Description
At GM Motorsports, we are driven by a clear purpose: to accelerate our teams’ ability to win on the racetrack and in the marketplace. Our vision is to be the benchmark of global motorsports excellence, inspiring enduring passion for our brands and products through world-class performance, innovation, and teamwork. We are looking for people who share our mindset and core values — ownership in organizational success, a commitment to add value to our team, and the courage to reject mediocrity in pursuit of exceptional results.
As a CFD Surface Design Engineer at GM Motorsports, you will lead the development, maintenance, and automation of complex CAD assemblies that form the foundation of our high-fidelity aerodynamic simulations. Leveraging advanced CAD and scripting tools, you will ensure robust, parametric, and simulation-ready geometry to support rapid design iteration within GM’s Aerodynamics Group.
In this role, you will work closely with CFD engineers to enable efficient mesh generation, reduce model preparation time, and improve consistency across full-vehicle and subsystem CFD studies. By integrating automated processes and scalable design practices, you will enhance the reliability and throughput of simulation-driven development.
Collaboration is central to success in this position. You will partner with cross-functional teams across GM Motorsports and key external partners to align CAD strategies to advance CFD simulations, wind tunnel testing, and on-track implementation. Your contributions will directly impact the speed and accuracy of design decisions, helping translate design ideas into high fidelity CAD to increase vehicle performance in a fast-paced racing environment.
This position may be filled with a CFD Surface Design Engineer or Senior CFD Surface Design Engineer. The level for this role will be determined based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experience.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop and maintain clean, simulation-ready CAD geometry for use in CFD workflows across multiple platforms
- Build and refine high-quality surface models with appropriate continuity to support accurate aerodynamic analysis
- Organize and manage CAD assemblies with clear structure, naming conventions, and version control for efficient CFD use
- Incorporate parametric design and automation features to enable rapid updates, configuration changes, and repeatable CFD workflows
- Reconstruct and refine legacy, imported or scanned/point cloud geometry to meet internal CFD and aerodynamic standards
- Optimize models for usability, ensuring they are easy to modify, update, and reuse across simulation studies
- Identify and resolve geometry issues that negatively impact mesh quality, solver stability, or convergence
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate design intent into efficient, simulation-ready models and support iterative development cycles
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications): CFD Surface Design Engineer
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in CAD surfacing, aerodynamic development, CFD support, or a related engineering field.
- Working proficiency in Siemens NX, CATIA, or equivalent CAD surfacing software, with experience developing or refining geometry for CFD or simulation-driven workflows.
- Understanding of how CAD geometry affects meshing, solver stability, convergence, and aerodynamic accuracy, including basic knowledge of G0, G1, and G2 continuity.
- Ability to create and maintain accurate, watertight, simulation-ready geometry and clean up imported or legacy CAD models with appropriate guidance.
- Familiarity with surface-interrogation methods, parametric modeling, design intent, and CAD automation concepts.
- Ability to identify and resolve routine geometry, topology, and model-integrity issues while maintaining accurate and organized CAD data.
- Effective communication, collaboration, and prioritization skills when working with CAD, CFD, aerodynamics, and vehicle engineering teams.
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications): Senior CFD Surface Design
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- 6+ years of progressive experience in CAD surfacing, aerodynamic development, CFD support, or a related engineering field.
- Advanced proficiency in Siemens NX, CATIA, or equivalent software, with demonstrated experience developing, maintaining, and refining complex CAD assemblies for CFD and simulation-driven development.
- Deep understanding of how surface quality and geometry affect meshing, solver stability, convergence, and aerodynamic accuracy, with the ability to independently deliver high-quality, watertight, simulation-ready geometry.
- Strong knowledge of G0, G1, and G2 continuity, curvature quality, and surface-interrogation methods, including experience reconstructing and refining imported, legacy, scanned, or point-cloud geometry.
- Demonstrated experience applying parametric modeling and CAD automation to improve repeatability, efficiency, and design iteration, along with the ability to resolve complex geometry, topology, and model-integrity issues independently.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, configuration control, and organization of CAD data and assemblies, with the ability to provide technical guidance, review geometry, and mentor less-experienced designers or engineers.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across CAD, CFD, aerodynamics, vehicle engineering, and external partner teams.
What Will Give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience in motorsports, automotive, or aerospace environments.
- Experience reconstructing or refining legacy, scanned or imported geometry.
- Experience building automation into CAD assemblies to streamline updates, improve repeatability, and reduce manual effort across simulation workflows.
- Familiarity with surface interrogation tools such as zebra stripes, curvature combs, and reflection analysis
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
- Passion for motorsports and understanding of vehicle performance engineering.
