Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

As a Battery Cell Design Release Engineer, you’ll lead the development and release of battery cells used in GM electric and hybrid vehicles. You’ll work with engineering teams, suppliers, and joint venture partners to deliver cell designs that meet vehicle requirements for quality, durability, performance, cost, and timing.

Based at GM’s Warren Technical Center, you’ll work with teams across the battery organization, including the Global Battery Systems Lab on campus. Your work will support both current production vehicles and future programs.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the battery cell product development team, coordinating with GM functions, suppliers, and joint venture partners.
  • Guide cell design, packaging, and integration into battery modules, packs, and vehicle systems.
  • Partner with designers and module engineers to ensure components fit and interfaces work together.
  • Apply lessons learned from prior programs and ensure designs follow the Bill of Design.
  • Work with manufacturing teams to support buildability, identify root causes, resolve issues, and define quality requirements.
  • Partner with service teams to ensure cell designs can be serviced.
  • Lead or support design failure mode and effects analysis, design reviews based on failure modes, and design reviews based on test results.
  • Support design verification and production validation, and contribute to the Advanced Design Verification Plan and Report.
  • Resolve development and validation issues, manage design changes, and provide status updates to propulsion program teams.
  • Lead cell production quality efforts, including warranty reviews, issue resolution, and proactive engagement with production teams.
  • Collaborate with module engineers and cross-functional partners to optimize cell and module designs.
  • Coordinate development and publication of component technical specifications and interface control documents.
  • Support purchasing with component sourcing and purchase orders for engineering builds.
  • Work with purchasing, quality, and suppliers to manage cost, supply chain resilience, design requirements, and timing.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, electrochemical, or materials engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of professional experience supporting engineering product development, design release, requirements development, validation, issue resolution, or supplier collaboration.
  • Working knowledge of battery cells and how they integrate into modules, packs, and electrified vehicles.
  • Ability to analyze technical issues, support root-cause investigations, and coordinate corrective actions and design changes.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional work and communicate technical requirements, decisions, and status to internal teams and external partners.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in engineering, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, electrochemical, or materials engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery cells, cell components or materials, and battery cell testing or validation.
  • Experience with battery cell manufacturing, supplier quality, battery suppliers, product assurance, or warranty issue resolution.
  • Familiarity with design and quality methods such as design failure mode and effects analysis, design reviews based on failure modes, reliability methods, or statistical process control.
  • Experience with engineering analysis and design tools such as computer-aided engineering, finite element analysis, computer-aided design, thermal analysis, MATLAB, Simulink, or Python.
