The Role
We are seeking an Engineering Analysis – Technical Specialist to join GM Canada’s Product Safety, Regulations and Field Actions team in Oshawa. In this unique role, you will focus on how GM’s occupant protection, crash sensing, active safety, and vehicle dynamics systems perform in real‑world crashes, primarily in the Canadian market, to gather insights for vehicle safety, legal, and product development strategies.
Acting as part forensic engineer and field investigator, you may travel to inspect vehicles and components, analyze event data and occupant kinematics, and provide clear and comprehensive technical assessments for internal stakeholders, litigation support and in some cases, regulatory authorities.
Key Responsibilities

Investigate, analyze and evaluate the performance of the vehicle systems, like those listed below, in current and past GM products that may have been involved in field incidents:

occupant protection systems (air bags, seat belts, sensing, seats/knee bolsters)
-
vehicle dynamic performance for vehicle control systems (brakes, steering, vehicle stability, and active safety)
-

Collect and/or interpret field data (including photos, videos, diagnostic codes, measurements, and event data recorder information – airbag & active safety) and assess occupant protection performance.

Support GM Legal Staff, outside legal counsel, trial counsel, and external insurer with technical assessments, documentation, and, in some cases, expert and corporate representative testimony for product liability matters.

Prepare clear written reports and presentations and present investigation findings and recommendations.
Qualifications
Required
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, or related).
-
Licensed Professional Engineer (current or eligible to obtain license)
-
Experience (level‑dependent):
-
7th Level: Minimum 5+ years in automotive design, testing, manufacturing, or product investigations.
-
8th Level: Minimum 10 years in automotive design, testing, manufacturing, or product investigations, with demonstrated technical leadership.
-

Broad vehicle knowledge and hands‑on experience with vehicle inspections, investigations, teardowns, diagnostic interrogation.
-
Knowledge and experience working in one or more of the following key technical areas: occupant protection, active safety, vehicle dynamics (e.g. steering and braking system performance), electric vehicles.
-
Strong analytical skills; able to handle complex, high‑visibility analyses subject to internal and external expert review.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, defensible technical documents for legal and regulatory audiences.
-
High level of interpersonal skills; effective cross‑functional and cross‑cultural collaboration (Canada, U.S., global).
-
Strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines.
-
Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and sensitivity to confidential matters.
-
High degree of initiative; able to work independently with appropriate guidance.
-
Ability and willingness to travel within Canada (sometimes on short notice) and occasionally to the U.S.
Preferred
-
Master’s degree in Engineering in related field.
-
Experience in accident reconstruction, occupant protection restraint and/or passive and/or active safety system development, design, testing, validation, or research.
-
Prior experience in a similar field investigation role. Experience analyzing field incidents involving GM or other OEM products.

Experience applying DFSS / Red X or similar structured problem‑solving and statistical methods; DFSS Green/Black Belt is an asset.
-
Technical leadership, such as publications, patents, or active participation in technical organizations.
-
Experience using Bosch CDR tools and software.
-
French language proficiency
Compensation
The salary range for this role is $131,000.00 to $180,900.00. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
