About the Role:
Design Release Engineer – Bumper, Grille, Fascia, Trim & Exterior Lighting (BGFTXL)
The GM Exterior team delivers bold, high-quality exterior hardware that wins customers through styling and performance. As a Design Release Engineer, you will lead or participate on multi-functional product development teams and be responsible for requirements definition, design, validation, testing, and release of exterior subsystems (BGFTXL). You will collaborate closely with peers in creative design, purchasing, manufacturing, quality, validation, dimensional, CAE, and suppliers.
This role is ideal for an engineer who wants to deepen their technical expertise within the automotive enterprise, build strong cross-functional relationships, and grow into broader opportunities across GM.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead or support cross-functional Product Development Teams (PDTs) for exterior components/subsystems (suppliers, designers, engineers, validation, manufacturing, supplier quality, dimensional, CAE, purchasing, etc.).
- Design, package, and release BGFT components and directed-buy components (e.g., sensors, cameras, harnesses, lamps) to meet program cost, timing, mass, warranty, and quality targets.
- Develop and manage requirements and typical sections using Unigraphics math data; partner with Studio to develop surfaces that meet functional and appearance requirements.
- Develop innovative solutions for new technologies involving EV and autonomous vehicles, active safety, and lit elements.
- Ensure in-house designs are completed on time with quality and meet all program milestones and deliverables.
- Perform design studies and alternatives, prepare business cases, and present recommendations to enable efficient program decision-making.
- Support design and technical reviews to ensure design fidelity and application of best practices.
- Create and maintain Interface Control Document (ICD) requirements for component and subsystem interfaces; align with interfacing component owners.
- Support launch by partnering with assembly plants and cross-functional teams to rapidly identify, contain, and resolve issues.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
- 1+ year of experience as a Design Release Engineer or relevant industry experience.
- Experience executing vehicle development cycles from concept through production launch.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with internal and external customer organizations.
- Demonstrated program management skills.
- Strong physics-based, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- DFSS Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
- Knowledge of plastic injection molding, stamping, and metal forming design.
- Knowledge of fixture design and product validation.
- Experience with DFMEA and GD&T.
- Experience with budget management.
