The Role

The Senior Manager, Advanced User Experience Strategy is an enterprise design leader responsible for shaping user experience strategy across GM’s in-vehicle, digital, and connected experiences. This role operates at the intersection of hardware and software, translating enterprise and Design strategy into clear experience direction, operating plans, governance, and scalable execution frameworks. Working upstream in programs, this leader establishes foundational experience architecture, interaction principles, component strategies, and reusable patterns that branded studios can build upon while preserving meaningful brand differentiation. As a pre-eminent strategic authority, this leader partners with senior and executive leadership to influence product experience, design systems, and organizational effectiveness in a software-defined vehicle environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Set and lead long-term advanced user experience strategy across in-vehicle, app, and digital experiences, aligning priorities with GM business strategy, customer needs, and future-state experience goals.

  • Lead upstream strategy work early in programs by establishing foundational experience architecture, component logic, interaction principles, and design criteria for branded studio execution.

  • Define how hardware and software work together as one cohesive experience, integrating physical components, digital interfaces, and visual interaction layers into a unified system.

  • Create and evolve reusable experience frameworks, suites of parts, patterns, and behaviors that scale across programs while enabling meaningful brand differentiation.

  • Translate enterprise and Design-wide initiatives into UX priorities, standards, operating plans, governance, and execution frameworks for teams of teams.

  • Advise senior leadership and lead complex, multidimensional UX challenges through strategic thinking, data, governance, and compelling narratives that clarify tradeoffs and drive decisions.

  • Own strategic initiatives and KPIs tied to design quality, timing, integration, adoption, and enterprise experience outcomes while building organizational capability and developing future UX leaders.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Extensive experience leading UX, Human Interface Design, product experience, design systems, or digital experience strategy in complex enterprise environments.

  • Proven success defining strategic direction and converting it into operating models, governance, roadmaps, execution frameworks, and measurable outcomes.

  • Strong record of leading cross-functional forums, resolving complex tradeoffs, and influencing senior leadership through data, strategic storytelling, and clear recommendations.

  • Demonstrated experience building and leading teams, including other leaders, in high-ambiguity and high-visibility settings.

  • Strong understanding of software, product, design, engineering, and customer experience ecosystems, including how hardware and software combine to create cohesive experiences.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, UX, Product Design, Human Factors, Psychology, Engineering, or a related field.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, UX, Product Design, Human Factors, Psychology, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience shaping user experience strategy for automotive, connected products, software-defined vehicles, or other complex physical-digital ecosystems.

  • Experience establishing enterprise design systems, governance models, reusable patterns, measurement frameworks, or scalable operating processes.

  • Experience influencing product roadmaps and design direction across multiple programs, platforms, brands, business units, or regions.

  • External recognition or demonstrated thought leadership in UX strategy, product experience, human-centered design, or design systems.

Leadership Expectations

This leader is expected to represent GM’s UX expertise internally and externally, champion large-scale change, create clarity in ambiguity, and model GM behaviors in how they lead, decide, and develop others.
