The Role
A VMEC Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) develops some of General Motor’s most advanced and exciting mobility features. This dynamic role supports innovative technology development applicable to aspects of autonomous, electric, and traditional internal combustion applications in the Vehicle Motion Supervision product in Chassis Controls team.
The Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) is a highly skilled individual contributor recognized for their expertise across the entire vehicle development lifecycle. This role encompasses responsibilities such as requirements definition, design and implementation, testing, and problem resolution. Proficiency in agile methodologies, systems engineering, requirements management, and embedded controls development and calibration is highly desirable. A strong drive and determination to grow both technically and professionally while working on some of General Motors' most innovative features are essential for success in this position!
What You’ll do:
- Collaborate with Functional System Architect (FSA) to align on requirements structure and intent.
- Develop and define requirements for applicable sub-systems or ART Solutions.
- Create and maintain Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS) for applicable programs. Look at moving towards BTS format in the long term. (**as applicable in your area)
- Create and maintain Behavior Technical Specification (BTS) for applicable ART Solutions.
- Follow BDD principles focusing on requirements development with behavioral impacts to customer in mind.
- Lead Triad Meetings and discussions with key stakeholders to develop behavioral requirements and “Given / When / Then” scenarios.
- Create and maintain requirements for serial data and diagnostics (ex. RIDs DIDs) and U-services. (This is for SW engineers in some areas. Potentially ART specific)
- Develop block diagrams per Model Based Systems Engineering concepts:
- For SDV 2.0 based programs, develop models and block diagrams using Rhapsody per Model Based Systems Engineering principles.
- For VIP programs, create MBSE models when moving SSTS to BTS type requirements.
- Create/Maintain Solution FMEAs for given area of responsibility. Maintain Subsystem FMEAs for VIP.
- Collaborate with Controls and Software Engineers to review controls design and/or software implementation, ensuring compliance with requirements.
- Features / Stories in Jira to manage sub-system / solution requirements.
- Support Testable Functionality Roll-Out Plan (TFRP) definition.
- Support that testable scenarios meet the intent of BTS requirements.
- Support development and communication of AFMEAs and PFMEAs in area of responsibility providing context of software related failure modes and contributions.
- Bring awareness of hardware failures to the software team for sev 9, 10.
- Bring awareness of failures to manufacturing team.
- Support the root cause analysis for all applicable sub-system related issues and translate resolutions into new or revised requirements as appropriate.
- Support development of OBD regulations requirements as applicable.
- Support the development of Safety Requirements.
- Rolldown from systems/systems safety
- Support Calibration requirements development.
- Operate in agile development of software-related requirements.
- Take part as a member and key stakeholder in regular scrum meetings including Iteration
- Planning, Iteration Review, DSU, and Program Increment Ceremonies. (as applicable)
- Collaborate with scrum teams and ART members, including Iteration Planning, Iteration Review, DSU, and Program Increment Ceremonies. (as applicable)
- Support peripheral meetings with Product Team Members, FSAs, other SSLEs, and Systems Engineers.
- Support advanced technical work projects that drive future features and vehicle enhancements
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or related engineering discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with General Chassis Systems/Vehicle Dynamics/Kinematics
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with ASIL D safety systems
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills, including independent judgment and decision-making skills, where problems are very unusual and extremely difficult
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues
- Physics-based understanding of the Voice-of-Customer
- Ability to effectively communicate issues, status and recommendations to leadership
- Proven ability in project management skills and ability to teach others
- Ability to prioritize work with only limited direction from manager
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
- Masters or PhD in Engineering with an emphasis on Controls
- Experience related to specifying physics of dynamic electromechanical systems (e.g., Brakes, Chassis, Suspension, Electrification, Thermal, etc.)
- Experience with calibration, software, and controls development
- Experience leveraging simulation environments and plant modeling for testing or requirements generation is a plus (e.g., Matlab/Simulink, CarSim, GT-Power, D-Space, ETAS, etc.)
- Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., Doors, Jama Connect, codebeamer, etc.)
- Experience with change management tools (e.g., IBM Rational Team Concert, Jira, etc.)
- Experience with OBD regulations requirements
- Experience with safety critical systems
