The Role
The Integrated Center Stack (ICS) and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) are among the most visible and customer-facing technologies in the vehicle, serving as the primary interface between customers and GM’s advanced digital cockpit experience. As a Design Release Engineer (DRE) – Displays & Cockpit Integration, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality display systems that seamlessly integrate design, functionality, and customer experience.
In this role, you will lead the development and integration of ICS, IPC, HVAC controls, and, where applicable, Front Passenger Infotainment (FPI) displays across vehicle programs. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including Interior, HVAC, Electrical, Software, User Experience, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Program Management, and Design Studio organizations to ensure successful execution from concept through launch and production.
This position offers broad exposure across engineering and product development disciplines, requiring both strong technical expertise and the ability to influence stakeholders, drive alignment, and resolve complex integration challenges. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all program requirements, deliverables, and customer expectations are achieved while balancing quality, cost, timing, and technical performance.
What You’ll Do
- Create Statement of Requirements (SOR) in collaboration with purchasing, studio and engineering to develop requirements, allowable cost, etc.
- Work alongside the Display team (instrument cluster, infotainment)
- Manage and update component-specific technical specification(s)
- Track and manage imperatives (cost, investment, mass, etc.) to meet program targets
- Provide leadership, coaching, and technical direction to supplier resident engineer(s) and/or other DREs
- Lead product development team (PDT) meetings and provided technical direction to PDT members
- Act as engineering lead in studio activities for surface development
- Work with supplier to develop needed execution criteria (Design execution sections, surface, die vectors, regulatory compliance, etc.) to support surface development
- Work with User Experience, Interior and/or Appearance Studios and Materials Engineering to identify solutions for achieving finish, color, gloss, etc. of materials
- Effectively communicate direction, status, issues and resolutions to PDT members, as well as all levels of leadership within the department, program team, purchasing and studio
- Support development builds and launch activities with troubleshooting, retrofits, etc. to ensure a flawless launch
- Manage all component validation activities and close all issues by required milestones
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience of electronic components or styled infotainment components or another related technology
- Possess a high level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex
- Demonstrate creativity, initiative and good judgment in decision making
- Experience as a cross-functional team leader dealing with styled components
- Experience with Launch in resolving fit/finish and any other build issues in manufacturing
- Knowledge of vehicle data communication systems (CAN, LVDS, LIN, ETHERNET)
- Knowledge of vehicle safety requirements (e.g., FMVSS, etc.)
- In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering process (FMEA, DFSS)
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Skilled in collaborating with design studio, program teams, other SMTs (interior and HVAC) and purchasing
- Design Engineering skills (UniGraphics training)
- Designing parts (mechanical hardware engineering) to meet validation requirements, DFx, thermal, etc.
- Running simulations / analyses (CAE, thermal, moldflow, etc.)
- CAD
- Knowledge of verification and validation process (component-, bench-, vehicle-level)
- Experience with managing multiple vehicle programs/suppliers simultaneously
