Descripción
The Team:
The MSP (Mechatronic Software Platform) organization is responsible for building and operating the common mechatronic software platform that underpins GM’s SDV strategy, and GM Basic Software is a core part of that foundation.
General Motors Basic Software (GMBSW) delivered by the MSP group provides a standardized, software foundation that enables reliable integration, deterministic execution, cybersecurity, functional safety, and long-term maintainability across GM’s ECU ecosystem.
The Role:
The Engineering Group Leader– BSW leads a team of engineers responsible for defining, delivering, evolving, and supporting GMBSW capabilities across the MSP portfolio, including foundational areas such as HWIO/MCAL/RTOS, communication, cyber, diagnostics, data management, programming/boot, RTE, safety, system services, and vehicle/micro moding.
This leader aligns BSW strategy and execution with portfolio needs, partners closely with HWIO, integration, validation, and application teams, and ensures GMBSW remains production-ready, reusable, scalable, and fit for current and emerging programs such as MSP-supported MCU platforms.
The EGL creates an inclusive, high-performing team culture, develops talent, drives alignment and clear direction, challenges the status quo to improve efficiency and quality, and helps translate MSP portfolio priorities into strong technical execution and dependable customer support.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
People & Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of BSW engineers, providing clear goals, feedback, and growth opportunities across technical depth, delivery, and leadership behaviors.
- Build an inclusive, psychologically safe culture that encourages ownership, collaboration, healthy challenge, and continuous learning.
- Set clear priorities and decision criteria for the team, balancing strategic platform investments, product commitments, and support demands across the MSP portfolio.
- Model a service-oriented leadership style focused on enabling partner teams and removing obstacles so teams can deliver high-quality software faster.
Technical & Product Leadership
- Own delivery strategy, scope, and execution for assigned GMBSW areas, ensuring alignment to MSP portfolio priorities, ECU roadmaps, and program timing needs.
- Define and evolve reusable BSW solutions that support GM’s standardized software foundation across domains, programs, and generations.
- Drive technical direction for BSW components spanning platform infrastructure such as HWIO/MCAL/RTOS, communications, cyber, diagnostics, memory/data services, programming/boot, RTE, safety, and core system services.
- Ensure BSW solutions are modular, maintainable, production-proven, and architected for reuse rather than one-off program customization.
Portfolio & Program Execution
- Partner with portfolio, architecture, HWIO, integration, validation, and application teams to align BSW delivery with platform and vehicle program needs.
- Support new platform and program needs by assessing fit, identifying gaps, and shaping pragmatic plans for delivery, reuse, and ownership boundaries.
- Drive clarity on interfaces and responsibilities across MSP, suppliers, and partner organizations, especially where GMBSW is delivered by MSP while build, integration, or adjacent software ownership sits elsewhere.
- Balance strategic roadmap work with responsive support for active portfolio initiatives and new builds.
Quality, Safety, Cybersecurity, and Release Readiness
- Ensure BSW products meet expectations for reliability, deterministic behavior, security, safety, and maintainability.
- Drive strong engineering practices for verification, defect management, issue triage, and root-cause resolution across owned BSW areas.
- Establish quality gates, readiness criteria, and technical review mechanisms appropriate for foundational platform software used across multiple programs.
- Use data and technical judgment to make timely tradeoff decisions on scope, risk, quality, and delivery timing.
Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Drive continuous improvement in BSW development, configuration, automation, and release workflows to reduce friction and improve speed and quality.
- Improve reuse, standardization, and scalability of GMBSW solutions across the MSP portfolio.
- Capture and scale best practices across teams and product areas, and help the organization find the way forward in ambiguous or changing situations.
- Contribute to long-term BSW strategy, including where to invest in platform capabilities, automation, and support for new initiatives.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field.
- Significant professional experience (typically 8+ years) in: Automotive or embedded software development, preferably in platform, infrastructure, or basic software domains.
- AUTOSAR-based systems and foundational ECU software such as drivers, communication stacks, diagnostics, boot/programming, memory, safety, cyber, or system services.
- Proven experience leading technical teams: Prior people-lead role, technical lead role, or equivalent leadership of cross-functional software efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to set direction, prioritize work, and deliver on commitments.
- Strong understanding of: Embedded software architecture, software platform layering, and hardware abstraction concepts.
-
Build, configuration, release, and lifecycle management practices for reusable platform software.
- At least one systems-level programming language such as C or C++, with familiarity in scripting/automation languages used in engineering workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical issues, work across organizational boundaries, and resolve blockers with sound judgment.
People Skills:
- Ownership mindset with strong accountability for product quality, technical direction, and delivery outcomes.
- Comfortable operating in complex, ambiguous environments and making decisions with imperfect information.
- Collaborative and inclusive leader who seeks diverse input and builds strong partnerships across functions.
- Passion for improving engineering systems, reducing friction, and enabling others to succeed through a strong platform foundation.
- Decisive, data-informed, and willing to challenge the status quo to improve speed, quality, and customer value.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Prior experience as an EGL, SWIM, or equivalent line manager in a complex multi-team software organization.
- Experience within a Software Defined Vehicle or similar large-scale platform environment.
- Hands-on experience with AUTOSAR BSW domains such as communication, diagnostics, programming/boot, safety, cyber, memory/data services, RTE, and low-level platform software.
- Experience supporting cross-portfolio platform needs where ownership spans MSP, suppliers, integration teams, and application organizations.
- Strong track record of driving automation, standardization, and engineering efficiency improvements.
Company Vehicle : Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.
Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
