Descripción

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

To achieve our vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM Mechatronics Hardware platform is evolving to provide robust service to our customers. We are seeking a technical engineer in propulsion hardware and electrical design as we continue to staff a hardware engineering team that will own the end-to-end design and development of our propulsion controller hardware.

The Hardware Design Engineer will be supporting the technical design & development of the propulsion controller hardware for GM’s next generation vehicles. The role requires a professional with a background in automotive ECU architecture, design, and analysis, and a desire to learn to launch ECU’s into production.

The ideal candidate will possess a background in electrical schematic design, performing controller validation/testing, manufacturing knowledge, warranty analysis, and instrumentation design.  You will work with cross-functional teams (Semiconductor, DREs, GM software, PCB layout, Mechanical Engineering, Supplier, Validation, Quality) to deliver quality product on time.

What You'll Do

  • Design of propulsion controller electrical hardware: from schematic capture, worst case analysis, PCB layout, bring-up, debug, signal integrity and power integrity (SI/PI), design verification test (environmental and EMC), to manufacturing support and production launch.
  • Design and development of the propulsion controller hardware (from concept design to launch) while meeting cost, timing, quality, and safety targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as software, mechanical, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of the electrical design of the propulsion controller hardware.
  • Work closely with contract manufacturing partners to ensure successful product build, from prototype through to mass production, while maintaining quality, cost, and timing targets.
  • Electrical schematic design and PCB layout.
  • Perform/support detailed hardware analysis – worst case analysis, thermal analysis, signal integrity, power integrity, etc.
  • Assist in design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for testing (DFT).
  • Drive the validation and testing of hardware components and systems, ensuring high levels of reliability and performance.
  • Establish test plans and protocols to validate designs against requirements.  Work with other team members to perform testing.
  • Assist in troubleshooting hardware issues, root cause analysis, and developing solutions to resolve design problems.
  • Support manufacturing partners in troubleshooting and resolving any production-related issues that arise during the manufacturing process.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure optimal solutions.
  • Support DFMEA/PFMEA; ensure lessons learned and best practices are included.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in electronic hardware design or related.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuit design and PCB layout.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation processes.
  • Understanding of hardware design and failure mode.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in controller development process, including but not limited to knowledge of schematics, PCB layouts, EMC and power dissipation.
  • This position requires you to be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects and work in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex and difficult to solve.
  • Effective interpersonal skills that focus and influence others, including those which may have priority differences with yours.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • Master's degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • 5+ years of embedded controls hardware experience.
  • Experience in the GM component specification and release process.
  • Basic understanding of vehicle serial data communications (e.g., CAN, GMLAN, & LIN).
  • Knowledge of OBD-II diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL).
  • Experience in design & analysis tools like: Mentor Graphics (schematic & layout), Ansys (signal integrity), Simplis (power integrity), Altair (EMC), Mathcad, PSpice & Saber.
  • Knowledge of design development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for testing (DFT).
  • Knowledge of validation procedures and methods to test.
  • Knowledge of controller manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of automotive industry standards (ISO 26262, ASIL) and safety-critical design principles.
