About the Team

Compute & Connectivity Hardware (CCH) is part of GM’s Vehicle Software & Electronics Engineering (VSEE) organization within Software & Services Engineering. The team develops the physical hardware foundation for GM’s software-defined vehicles, including compute, connectivity, networking, displays, and other electronic platforms that enable in-vehicle software, infotainment, ADAS, vehicle controls, and connected experiences.

CCH’s work spans architecture, requirements, hardware and electronics design, embedded hardware, systems integration, validation, launch, and in-market performance. Our engineers collaborate across software, systems, controls, cybersecurity, functional safety, vehicle engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing to develop reliable, production-ready hardware for GM’s vehicle portfolio.

Job Description Summary

We are seeking a high-performing Senior Display Hardware Engineer OLED Panel to join our Advanced Display Technology team, driving New Technology Introduction (NTI) for OLED panel architecture, with a focus on pixel structure, OLED stack design, and TCON/driver IC integration. You will explore and develop next-generation OLED panel technologies with suppliers, lead their validation, and mature them to a level of technical readiness suitable for handoff to the Sourcing team for production programs.

The Role:

The Senior Display Hardware Engineer, OLED Panel will explore, develop, and mature OLED panel technologies ahead of production programs, building a validated technology pipeline for future OLED-based automotive displays such as instrument clusters, center displays, and passenger infotainment screens.

The engineer will be responsible for advancing the technical readiness of the OLED pixel structure, OLED stack, and the associated timing controller (TCON) and driver IC design.

You will work closely with OLED panel suppliers, semiconductor/driver IC suppliers, and internal cross-functional teams to explore and mature next-generation OLED technologies and will partner with the Sourcing team to hand off mature technologies into production programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Scout and evaluate emerging OLED pixel structure and tandem stack technologies (sub-pixel layout, emissive layer arrangement, TFT backplane interaction) relevant to future automotive display programs.
  • Define technology requirements and feasibility criteria for next-generation OLED structures targeting improved brightness, lifetime, and power efficiency, and lead early-stage supplier engagement to explore candidate technologies.
  • Lead proof-of-concept builds and technology demonstrations with OLED panel suppliers to evaluate new pixel and stack architectures.
  • Evaluate the optical performance of candidate pixel and tandem stack architectures — including emission spectrum, color gamut, luminance efficiency, and viewing-angle color shift — using panel-level optical simulation and bench measurement, in coordination with the Optical Engineer.
  • Define and validate TCON and driver IC specifications for emerging technologies, including timing, gamma correction, and interface protocols, in coordination with panel and semiconductor suppliers.
  • Conduct bench evaluations and simulations to assess new technology performance in brightness, color shift, viewing angle, power consumption, and burn-in risk.
  • Lead supplier testing to validate new panel technologies under automotive operating conditions (temperature cycling, humidity, vibration, sunlight exposure), advancing technology readiness toward production maturity.
  • Analyze panel measurement data (luminance, contrast ratio, color shift, response time, uniformity) and correlate results with pixel and tandem stack design choices to assess technology maturity against future program requirements.
  • Drive root-cause resolution of panel-level issues such as non-uniformity, Mura, image sticking, and burn-in discovered during technology development, working with suppliers to de-risk the technology.
  • Coordinate with the Optical Engineer on integration of circular polarizer and anti-reflective coatings onto the OLED stack, balancing outdoor readability (glare/reflection reduction) with brightness and power efficiency.
  • Interface with the Optical Engineer to align OLED technology development with the broader display optical roadmap.
  • Build the technology maturation package and lead technology transfer to the Sourcing team once OLED panel technology is mature and ready for production programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Display Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in OLED display technology development, advanced display engineering, or display driver electronics.
  • Strong knowledge of OLED pixel architecture, TFT backplanes (LTPS/Oxide), and tandem OLED stack technologies.
  • Experience with TCONs, driver ICs, display interfaces, and timing architectures.
  • Understanding of OLED optical performance, including brightness, color gamut, viewing angle, and color shift.
  • Experience with display characterization, simulation, and validation tools.
  • Familiarity with automotive display performance and reliability requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Experience working with OLED panel manufacturers, material suppliers, or display semiconductor suppliers.
  • Proven track record taking technologies from concept through validation and production readiness.
  • Experience with OLED burn-in mitigation, pixel compensation, and display aging effects.
  • Knowledge of HDR implementation and image quality optimization for OLED displays.
