Trim Shop Trim Technician
 

Summary

The Trim Shop Trim Technician in Creative Design partners closely with Design Fabrication, Creative Design, and Color & Trim teams to produce completed prototype interior parts for seating bucks, clinic properties, and Design show properties. In this role, you will interpret blueprints from the Fabrication team and translate Design direction from Creative Designers and CMF (color, material, finish) studios into high-quality, finished physical properties.

This is an intermediate-level professional position that requires independent judgment, decision-making on significant matters, and experience and/or specialized training typically obtained through specialized academic or technical instruction.
 

General Purpose of Position
 

The Trim Shop Trim Technician is responsible for:

  • Performing all Trim shop work utilizing traditional bench skills and technology-driven fabrication techniques to create various show properties while meeting customer timing and quality requirements.

  • Collaborating with design, engineering, and other stakeholders to solve problems and develop innovative trimming solutions.

  • Actively participating in mentoring Trim shop team members and assisting in the development and occasional demonstration of new trimming practices and procedures.
     

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Exhibit a safety-first mindset by identifying, taking ownership of, and resolving safety concerns.

  • Create finished final surfaces for physical design properties.

  • Support studio personnel in developing solutions to engineering and design challenges.

  • Understand program timelines and model quality requirements and align work accordingly.

  • Adhere to common GM Global Fabrication processes and best practices.

  • Mentor others in standardized Trim Shop work methods and required technical abilities.

  • Attend program-related meetings as defined by DFO Leadership.

  • Follow corporate data management processes (Teamcenter, SharePoint, etc.) and communication systems (timekeeping, email, Slack, etc.).

  • Proactively ask for and anticipate customer needs and make business decisions, in alignment with shop leadership, that support those needs.
     

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates the courage to embrace change and encourages others to do the same in support of organizational improvement.

  • High level of creative proficiency applied to trim and interior property development.

  • Highly proficient in trim-oriented bench skills and related technology.

  • Strong understanding of trimming methodology and best practices.

  • Ability to successfully incorporate engineering criteria into functional, high-quality properties.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Functional proficiency with current software tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Adobe Illustrator, etc.).

  • Actively seeks opportunities for innovation, executing on new ideas and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
     

Technical and Craft Proficiency

  • Ability to completely tear down and re-trim concept and model seats independently.

  • Ability to completely pattern, develop, and trim all concept and prototype properties independently.

  • Ability to completely pattern and develop concept and prototype seats independently.

  • Ability to trim all aspects of show car and model properties independently.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently.

  • Proficient at intermediate bench engineering.

  • Ability to proficiently operate at least four pieces of trim shop technology and their associated software, such as:

    • Laser etching

    • Vinyl cutter

    • Eastman cutter

    • Foam milling

    • Old embroidery

    • New embroidery

    • Perforation

    • Graining
       

Level Expectations

  • Intermediate-level professional role requiring:

    • Independent judgment and decision-making on significant matters.

    • Experience and/or specialized training typically obtained through a specialized course of academic or technical instruction.
