Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

At GM’s Embedded Software organization, we’re driving the future of mobility through innovation, agility, and excellence. Our team supports embedded controls across all vehicle systems, ensuring we deliver beloved, safe, exciting, high quality vehicles to our customers.
We’re seeking an Engineering Group Manager to lead our Software Architecture team, a high-impact group that defines and evolves GM’s Software Architecture strategies across all vehicle platform domains. You are a confident, execution-oriented leader simplifies complex situations, drives alignment across functions, crushes ambiguity and moves with urgency. You will challenge constructively, make sound decisions under pressure, and ensure critical issues are addressed and driven to resolution. In this people leader role, as well as having responsibilities for the Embedded Controls Software Architecture strategy, you will help develop and lead strategic action plans as we reinvent ourselves from auto manufacturer to a tech company! The heart of this position is to take the natural complexity of large systems and condense them to simple, executable software plans, a key driver of our scaling ambitions.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Manage a team of 12-15 Software Architecture Engineers and Technical Specialists to develop and oversee the organization’s Software Architecture strategy

Establish and maintain Software Architecture governance, including adherence to requirements and best practices

Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to drive software Architecture efficiency, guide improvements and ensure alignment with our organizational goals and Built-in-Quality strategy

Influence cross-functional partners, including teams that may be skeptical or resistant, to align on priorities, decisions, and standards

Resolve competing demands, sensitive situations, and conflicts with other teams while keeping the organization focused on outcomes

Navigate ambiguity, define clear action plans, assign ownership, and maintain momentum until results are delivered

Speak candidly about risks, roadblocks, and gaps, and escalate appropriately when enterprise outcomes are at risk

Champion continuous learning and skill development initiatives to strengthen Software Architecture expertise across the organization and build a sustainable, high‑performing technical workforce
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
-
7+ years of experience in Embedded Control systems and Software Architecture
-
4+ years of direct people leader experience, leading and developing high‑performing engineering teams while driving delivery, coaching talent, and fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment
-
Demonstrated experience guiding embedded controls and software architecture teams, including shaping architecture strategy, driving cross‑functional alignment on complex system designs, and influencing governance, KPIs/OKRs, and enterprise‑level development practices
-
Strong knowledge of interacting embedded systems, critical path systems, and safety forward design
-
Proven ability to influence stakeholders across functions and levels, resolve priority conflicts, and drive bold integrity-driven decisions
-
Track record of defining innovative solutions in ambiguous problem spaces and converting ideas into execution
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

Master’s degree in Engineering or related field
-
10+ years of experience in Embedded Control Systems and Software Architecture
-
6+ years of engineering leadership experience, with a proven track record of scaling teams and driving complex technical initiatives across cross‑functional groups

Experience leading engineering teams in Mechatronic Embedded Control systems
-
Background in Propulsion, Battery, Vehicle Dynamics, Body or Thermal control domains
