Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Cole Engineering Center in Warren, MI, three times per week, at minimum.
The Role:
This posting is seeking a driven Fuel Systems Design Release Engineer to join our team and lead the product development and integration activities for fuel systems components and subsystems
This position would be a great opportunity for an engineer that is seeking a role with a strong design and packaging focus; interaction with program teams; visits to the assembly plants; and opportunities to work with people from numerous different organizations within GM (Design, Safety/Crashworthiness, Thermal, Emissions Compliance, Vehicle and GPS Integration, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Supplier Quality, etc).
The engineer that is selected for this position will join a great team that offers strong support (as needed) from the Subsystem Lead DE, the Technical Specialists, the EGM, and DRE peers.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Support/Lead PDT (product development team) for your components/subsystems- e.g. timing, parts lists, DFMEA, etc.
- Utilize engineering tools and processes to successfully develop components and systems for vehicle programs
- Effectively achieve program milestones by thorough and rigorous program management
- Coach and lead suppliers to timely execution of program deliverables with excellence.
- Perform appropriate design studies, including alternative analyses, and make recommendations based on performance, cost, mass, timing, etc
- Release your components/subsystems for use at the vehicle assembly plants, plus ensure the correct parts are ordered for any pre-production vehicle builds.
- Understand and ensure documented compliance to all CTS (component technical specification) requirements, SSTS (subsystem technical specification) requirements, VTS (vehicle technical specification) requirements, and Design Best Practices related to your parts.
- Coordinate engineering activities with other functions and departments (i.e. Suppliers, Supplier Quality, Purchasing, Validation, Manufacturing, Safety, Electrical, Thermal, etc) to ensure your parts meet requirements and imperatives, and that they interface appropriately with surrounding components and systems.
- Lead the problem-solving efforts for PRTS issues relating to your parts, with guidance as required from the Lead Engineer and technical experts
- Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations as required
- Support/Lead technical/peer reviews of your components/subsystems, and participate in technical reviews in support of peers
- Review current product warranty data and address emerging issues
- Develop and implement cost optimization changes to process and/or product.
- Stay abreast of new technology
- Communicate lessons learned with the GSSLT (global subsystem leadership team) to enhance corporate knowledge
- Travel, as required
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering
- 5+ years relevant experience
- Competency in MS Office tools—especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Ability to work well both independently and with others
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field (i.e. engineering, business, etc)
- DFSS Black Belt certification (Note: if not yet a Black Belt, we would work together to get you certified)
- Familiarity and demonstrated competence in GM tools and processes, especially ECM, PRTS, Teamcenter/VAS, VIS Mockup, UGNX, or CAE.
- High level of oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated project management skills and/or leadership experience
- Familiarity and experience working through the elements of GM Quality Chain
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes (component or vehicle)
- Basic understanding of Specifications and Release terms and systems
- Familiarity and experience with component and subsystem validation test methods and reporting
- General interest and ability in integration and system understanding
- High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult
- Experience working with Fuel Systems components or other Safety-related commodities
