Descripción

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role:

The Advanced Cell Process Team is looking for a talented and self-driven individual to fill our Senior Electrochemical Process Engineer role. This role offers the opportunity to leverage solid electrochemical engineering and process development experience to design and develop scalable battery cell formation processes for advanced battery cell technologies. Work will be primarily performed in GM Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center and our new battery development center. Work will involve regular interactions with R&D, Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Lead development activities focused on battery cell material interactions with formation processes and their impact on electrochemical performance

  • Lead interface with Product Engineering to ensure battery cell design supports robust formation processes (design for manufacturing)

  • Lead interface with R&D to understand advanced battery chemistries roadmap and their implications on high volume formation feasibility

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate battery cell requirements into scalable formation Bill of Process (BOP) and Bill of Equipment (BOE)

  • Lead team to develop in-house formation processes and tooling to improve quality and throughput

  • Identify, evaluate, and implement innovative formation technologies that enhance process capability, throughput, energy efficiency, and manufacturing performance

  • Support formation equipment hardware and software troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Support external partners in their formation development activities

  • Communicate progress status, technical recommendations, risks, and mitigation plans to leadership and stakeholders

  • Foster technical knowledge sharing and best practices across engineering teams while supporting the growth of less-experienced engineers.

  • Participate in PDT and Core technical reviews with development partners.

  • Develop and maintain necessary documentation (JES/TIS, PFD, PAD’s, PFMEA)

  • Lead Continuous Improvement Engineering Activities

  • Perform root cause analysis, develop solutions, implement corrective action plans on the floor and component/equipment suppliers

  • Analyze first time quality data and optimize processes using statistical tools such as Red-X, Design of Experiments or DFSS.

  • Domestic Travel - 10-15%

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering or related fields.

  • Familiarity with electrochemical analytic and cell performance evaluation techniques such as half cell testing, 3 Electrode testing, Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC), Direct Current Internal Resistance (DCIR), cycle life tests, etc.

  • 5+ years experience in process development for electrochemical systems (e.g. battery cells, fuel cells, ultracapacitors etc.)

  • 5+ years experience working directly with equipment suppliers and external partners.

  • 3+ years hands-on experience with battery cell formation equipment, including protocol scripting, equipment operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • 3+ years experience in leading teams to solve complex technical projects and drive execution through cross-functional collaboration.

  • 3+ years working experience in statistical analysis tools such as Minitab, Q-Das, or JMP

  • Basic understanding of battery cell manufacturing

  • Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance stack-up

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while exhibiting solid technical judgement and good project management skills.

  • Broad knowledge of GPDP and GM Internal Safety Requirements

  • Ability to travel

What Can Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in Electrochemical Engineering

  • 3+ years experience in direct ownership of formation process development

  • Experience with specification and procurement of new equipment

  • Experience with high volume battery cell manufacturing

  • Statistical problem-solving training such as OpEx or DFSS Blackbelt training
