Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale..

About the role:

General Motors is seeking a Senior Engineering Designer to join the Body Structures team. In this role, you will own the design and integration of body structure components and subsystems from concept through production release. You will develop high-quality Siemens NX models, resolve complex technical issues, and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, CAE, assembly, suppliers, and program teams to deliver safe, efficient, manufacturable, and production-ready vehicle structures.

The successful candidate will serve as a subject-matter expert for assigned parts or systems, provide technical leadership to other designers, and proactively drive solutions that improve quality, timing, mass, cost, and customer outcomes.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Own the design and engineering development of body structure components and subsystems, including lower structures, RESS enclosures, weld, and dispense.
  • Create, refine, and integrate parametric Siemens NX math models in accordance with GM design standards, Best Practices, Global infoBOOK requirements, and program timing.
  • Lead design activities for sheet metal, castings, composites, reinforcements, welds, adhesives, and related structural components.
  • Translate product requirements into robust design solutions while balancing structural performance, durability, mass, cost, manufacturability, assembly, and timing.
  • Lead and support Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, formability, blank utilization, die direction, weld access, gaging, and dimensional integration activities.
  • Collaborate with Design Release Engineers, Design Technical Specialists, CAE, manufacturing engineering, product integration, suppliers, and assembly teams.
  • Lead design reviews, virtual integration reviews, cross-functional issue resolution, and technical presentations.
  • Use NX analysis and other analytical tools to identify risks, evaluate alternatives, and incorporate study results into the design.
  • Identify and resolve clearance, interference, weld, sealant, assembly, and part-to-part integration issues.
  • Maintain accurate part specifications, including material, mass, attributes, and design intent.
  • Prepare and release high-quality math data, weld information, adhesives, and related design deliverables on schedule.
  • Support Engineering Change Requests and production issue resolution with timely, cost-effective design changes.
  • Proactively identify risks and develop solutions that eliminate late changes and improve launch readiness.
  • Mentor less-experienced designers and share lessons learned to strengthen team standards and capabilities.
  • Communicate design status, timing, risks, and technical recommendations clearly to leadership and program stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Product Design or Engineering
  • Five or more years of experience in automotive, body structure, mechanical design, or a related engineering design discipline.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Siemens NX, including parametric or hyper-parametric modeling.
  • Strong understanding of body-in-white and vehicle body structure design principles.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, design standards, manufacturing requirements, and subsystem integration.
  • Experience applying DFM/DFA, formability, welding, assembly, and clearance principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical problem solving with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, organization, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver quality work within program timing.

Your Skills & Abilities ( Required Qualifications):

  • Extensive knowledge of product design concepts and innovation in lower structure.
  • Extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes (i.e., stamping, castings etc.)
  • Experience in NX, VisMockup, Teamcenter required.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience designing stamped sheet metal, castings, composites, structural reinforcements, or electric vehicle enclosure components.
  • Experience with CAE-supported design development, structural performance, crash, durability, or stiffness studies.
  • Experience with weld, adhesive, sealant, gaging, dimensional variation, or BIW assembly requirements.
  • Familiarity with GM vehicle development processes, Engineering Change Requests, Vehicle Assembly Structure, Auros, or related engineering systems.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary design reviews or virtual integration activities.
  • Experience mentoring designers or serving as a technical lead.
