The Role

At General Motors, our product and manufacturing teams are redefining mobility by creating vehicles and experiences that make driving safer, smarter, and more connected. The Manufacturing Engineering Welding Group is part of the Global Manufacturing Engineering Body-in-White Execution Center, developing common welding systems that meet or exceed Bill of Equipment and program requirements. As a Body Welding Execution Engineer, you will support vehicle launches and current production by leading weld verification and qualification, reviewing product designs for resistance-welding compliance, and advancing welding processes, equipment, and standards. You will work with engineers, skilled trades, managers, suppliers, laboratories, and assembly plants to deliver manufacturing readiness, stable production, and continuous improvement across the vehicle program lifecycle.

What You'll Do

• Support body shop vehicle launches and current production across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from engineering and prototype builds through system validation, integration, launch, and production.
• Lead weld verification, qualification, and program testing; develop welding parameters and processes, review Manufacturing Requirements with Manufacturing Architects, ME, and PI, and perform deviation testing using robotic welding systems.
• Develop and implement common body welding systems, specifications, standards, and Manufacturing Requirements that meet program, Bill of Equipment, GM, and industry requirements.
• Support the integration, startup, debug, and troubleshooting of plant-floor welding equipment and weld-quality issues; provide technical direction to GM plant teams, suppliers, and strategic partners.
• Advance welding and joining technologies through ATW projects, including equipment and process development, validation, implementation, and weldability approvals for new materials and vehicle launch programs.
• Conduct and document weld evaluations, including mechanical property testing, microscopy, microhardness, metallography, scanning electron microscopy, and other laboratory or supplier testing as required.
• Collaborate across Body Center, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Integration, suppliers, skilled trades, and plant operations to estimate cost and timing, secure approvals and funding, capture lessons learned, digitize weld data, and improve productivity, cost, quality, and standardized work.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

• At least 3 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, welding engineering, or a related technical discipline, with experience supporting automotive welding technology or manufacturing operations.
• Strong understanding of automotive body shop equipment, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding, joining processes, tooling, and equipment troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of weld verification procedures, weld documentation, build shop support, and the mechanical and electrical systems used in welding processes.
• Ability to create and execute organized validation projects when standardized work is not yet available, apply practical problem solving, and develop innovative solutions to complex welding and joining issues.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, abstract-visualization, project-management, multitasking, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to support technical documentation, training, status reporting, and stakeholder facilitation across cultures and functions.
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, Teams, Teamcenter, and other standard computer or manufacturing software applications.
• Ability to read and understand CAD drawings, mechanical-system diagrams, wiring and hosing diagrams, and vehicle product designs.
• Ability to travel internationally and support vehicle launches, suppliers, and assembly plants across North America.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

• Bachelor of Science degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience programming FANUC robots and WTC weld controllers, and applying resistance spot welding to advanced high-strength steels and aluminum alloys.
• Experience with weld-fixture design, waterjet cutting, machining, weld coupon fabrication, and common manufacturing processes.
• Experience with metallographic sample preparation, Keyence microscopy, microhardness testing, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical testing using MTS tensile or fatigue equipment.
• Experience with Miyachi ADAM weld monitoring systems, Simufact welding simulation, CAD programs, and digital weld databases.
• Knowledge of GM Welding & Joining Standards, Process Control Plans, Manufacturing Requirements, Global Engineering Processes, and body shop troubleshooting or plant support.

Additional Information

Overtime pay and eligibility may vary based on business cycle, launch requirements, and department policies. Travel may be required to support launch activities or suppliers.
