Descripción

The Sr. Electrical Engineer defines requirements; applies applicable codes and GM standards; reviews designs and technical risks; and guides safe, compliant, reliable, cost-effective, maintainable, resilient, and sustainable decisions across project delivery and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • ·       Serve as GM’s electrical engineering subject matter expert for ICC planning, design, construction, and facility operations, providing independent technical leadership and decisions for major capital projects.
  • ·       Establish risk-based review plans, deliverables, hold points, responsibilities, and decision records based on safety, urgency, project impact, and business need.
  • ·       Review designs, studies, calculations, one-lines, specifications, models, submittals, deviations, substitutions, and field changes for technical basis, safety, code and utility compliance, constructability, reliability, maintainability, risk, and business alignment.
  • ·       Independently challenge consultant designs, contractor proposals, substitutions, and execution approaches when they do not adequately protect GM’s safety, technical, operational, schedule, cost, or lifecycle interests.
  • ·       Perform or review load-flow, short-circuit, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, voltage-drop, and lighting studies and calculations.
  • ·       Interpret and apply applicable IEEE, NFPA 70/NEC, NESC, OSHA, utility, jurisdictional, industry, and GM requirements.
  • ·       Lead electrical safety requirements, including arc-flash and incident-energy assessments, safe-work practices, equipment clearances, and grounding and bonding.
  • ·       Support project delivery from front-end planning through turnover, including scope development, studies, concepts, estimates, schedules, business cases, VDP activities, Appropriation Requests, design reviews, procurement, testing, inspections, commissioning, startup, outages, and final acceptance.
  • ·       Guide electrical concepts and decisions for utility services, distribution, transformers, switchgear, protection, metering, emergency power, grounding, major loads, power quality, lighting, controls, and life-safety and security systems.
  • ·       Evaluate value engineering, design-to-budget, repair, replacement, monitoring, and continued-use options using lifecycle cost, safety, reliability, resilience, maintainability, energy performance, constructability, operational impact, and future needs.
  • ·       Develop and maintain Statements of Requirements, Requests for Proposals, standards, specifications, electrical scopes and technical requirements, safety expectations, utility and permitting requirements, performance criteria, testing and inspection requirements, technical bid-evaluation criteria, templates, checklists, and governance documents aligned with applicable commercial requirements.
  • ·       Perform or direct field investigations, condition assessments, targeted testing, and documentation of existing electrical systems to establish risk, capacity, condition, and recommended actions.
  • ·       Resolve construction and operating-facility issues involving failures, failed tests, outages, damage, modifications, utility concerns, reliability, and power quality; coordinate with project teams, utilities, authorities, operations, safety, procurement, contractors, suppliers, and other disciplines.
  • ·       Improve standards and execution through project history, benchmarking, lessons learned, field experience, emerging technology, BIM/VDC, document management, and reusable guidance.
  • ·       Communicate risks, assumptions, alternatives, recommendations, and impacts to technical and nontechnical audiences, and mentor project teams and less-experienced engineers.
  • ·       Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • ·       Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, architectural engineering, or a related field.
  • ·       At least seven years of progressive electrical engineering or closely related owner-side technical experience supporting major commercial, industrial, manufacturing, or similarly complex projects across capital delivery, design, construction engineering, commissioning, or facility operations.
  • ·       Demonstrated expertise in power systems, utility services, distribution, transformers, switchgear, protection, grounding and bonding, lighting, controls, life-safety and security systems, power quality, codes, constructability, and risk-based design review.
  • ·       Experience reviewing electrical drawings, specifications, models, studies, calculations, and construction documents to identify gaps, assumptions, risks, quality concerns, and required decisions.
  • ·       Experience coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors, project managers, utilities, authorities, safety, operations, procurement, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
  • ·       Experience supporting planning, design, construction, commissioning, startup, facility modifications, outages, reliability, or asset sustainment. Occasional off-hours support may be required in exigent circumstances, including emergencies, planned shutdowns, or urgent facility issues.
  • ·       Ability to develop and improve standards, specifications, Statements of Requirements, Requests for Proposals, templates, checklists, and governance documents.
  • ·       Strong analytical, organizational, communication, presentation, and computer skills; ability to work independently, influence cross-functional teams, and make effective decisions with incomplete information.
  • ·       Commitment to safety, quality, sustainability, compliance, and GM policies.
  • ·       Ability and willingness to travel typically up to approximately 25% within North America, with occasional additional travel as business needs require; a valid passport is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ·       Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred; candidates without a current license may be considered if they can obtain an applicable license within 12 months of appointment. Licensure in other jurisdictions may be required based on assigned work.
  • ·       Master’s degree in electrical engineering, architectural engineering, construction management, business administration, or a related field.
  • ·       Experience with automotive, manufacturing, logistics, research, data center, office, campus, utility infrastructure, or other industrial facilities.
  • ·       Experience with existing-facility evaluation, root-cause analysis, substations, high- and low-voltage distribution, transformers, switchgear, emergency and standby power, grounding, lighting, controls, life-safety and security systems, power quality, reliability, facility modifications, and repair or replacement strategies.
  • ·       Practical knowledge of utility service, interconnection, metering, protection, power quality, reliability, outages, service entrances, capacity, coordination, and utility standards.
  • ·       Experience with front-end planning, electrical studies, VDP activities, Appropriation Requests, and complex delivery methods such as design-build, design-bid-build, integrated project delivery, or construction management.
  • ·       Experience coordinating testing, inspections, commissioning, pre-installation meetings, technical submittals, field engineering, construction issue resolution, BIM/VDC, model coordination, outage planning, utility coordination, and technical records.
  • ·       Experience applying value engineering, lifecycle cost analysis, resilience, energy efficiency, electrification, low-carbon systems, adaptive reuse, or other sustainable electrical practices.
  • ·       Multi-jurisdictional licensure, reciprocity, or experience across multiple states, provinces, or authorities having jurisdiction.
  • ·       Spanish proficiency sufficient to communicate with project teams, contractors, plant personnel, and stakeholders in Spanish-speaking operations.
