Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

The Manufacturing Technical Specialist (MTS) - General Assembly (GA) is responsible for defining and advancing enterprise-wide manufacturing strategies, standards, and emerging technologies. This role drives the development of scalable, lean manufacturing solutions that enable seamless integration of new vehicle designs into production systems.

Operating as a senior individual contributor, the Technical Specialist partners closely with Product Engineering, Advanced Product Development, and Global Manufacturing Engineering teams to translate product intent into robust, production-ready manufacturing processes. The role is highly strategic, focusing on enterprise innovations, Manufacturing Requirements (MR) governance, and cross-program standardization.

What You Will Do

Manufacturing Strategy & Technology Development

  • Define and deploy global manufacturing strategies within Product Engineering System Management Teams (SMTs), ensuring alignment to enterprise priorities
  • Develop and mature new manufacturing technologies and concepts—including automation and up-integration components—to improve production efficiency, reduce Manufacturing Cost per Unit (MCPU), and deliver enterprise-wide impact across multiple programs.
  • Establish and govern Manufacturing Requirements (MRs) to support scalable and repeatable assembly processes
  • Lead development of quality-capable manufacturing systems, including robust processes architectures

Product & Process Integration

  • Ensure alignment between new product technologies and existing manufacturing systems, layouts, and standards
  • Partner with Product Engineering (PE) to specify and implement KCDS and critical design requirements
  • Represent Manufacture Engineering (ME) in DFMEA development to ensure manufacturability and risk mitigation
  • Develop and maintain Level 1 PFMEA aligned to enterprise processes

Global Standards & Governance

  • Serve as a core member of global expert teams and GSSLT, providing manufacturing insight and direction
  • Author and maintain Statement of Requirements (SOR) Appendix E1 for global programs
  • Review and disposition MR deviation requests, ensuring adherence to GA strategies
  • Drive incorporation of lessons learned into global manufacturing standards and documentation

Continuous Improvement & Execution Support

  • Support and coach PI (CME) teams in executing manufacturing strategies and ensuring compliance to defined ME requirements
  • Identify and implement improvements through ATW and advanced manufacturing initiatives
  • Provide technical direction on tooling, equipment, and assembly strategies
  • Benchmark competitive products and processes to inform future-state manufacturing solutions that keep GM at the forefront of GA production efficiency, deliver the lowest possible MCPU, and maintain and enhance the outstanding quality of General Motors vehicles.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Deep expertise in GA manufacturing processes and vehicle integration
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Bill of Process (BOP), Bill of Equipment (BOE)
    • Manufacturing Requirements (MRs) and MRDB
    • PFMEA / DFMEA development and integration
    • GVDP and advanced vehicle development workflows
  • Experience defining and deploying manufacturing strategies across multiple programs or platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to develop process concepts, layouts, and manufacturing system architectures
  • Experience supporting new vehicle launches in lean, GMS-compliant production environments
  • Ability to assess process dependencies and translate product requirements into manufacturing solutions
  • Proficiency using engineering systems and tools to develop manufacturing deliverables and documentation (i.e.: Teamcenter Visualization)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline or a related technical field

What Can Give You A Competitive Edge  (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Proven ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, pre-program or strategy-focused environments
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and influence without formal authority
  • Experience collaborating across global engineering and manufacturing teams
  • Excellent communication skills, including executive-level presentations and technical facilitation
  • Ability to simplify complex manufacturing challenges into clear, actionable strategies
  • Strong prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple high-impact initiatives
