Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Digital Paint Process Specialist role blends digital manufacturing, process engineering, and paint application expertise to enable virtual validation, improve launch quality, and drive standardization across global paint operations. The position supports both centralized Manufacturing Engineering and plant operations, requiring strong collaboration, independent decision-making, and the ability to lead change and manage multiple technical projects concurrently. This role will work with MSIE and Digitize Paint Team as well as our lunch an execution teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead digital paint process design and validation activities for new product launches and major equipment installations using Siemens NX, Teamcenter Line Designer/MPP, and Process Simulate.
- Aid in dev and understand robot simulations, and virtual commissioning models to validate equipment capability, ergonomics, throughput, and maintainability before installation.
- Program and validate robotic paint and sealer paths in the digital and Physical environment for appearance, material efficiency, and cycle time; support correlation between virtual and physical results.
- Be a part of the team that will develop digital twins of paint application systems to support scenario analysis, change management, and continuous improvement.
- Integrate process data, standards, and best practices into PLM environment to enable data-driven decision making and robust change control.
- Collaborate with plant Paint Shop Process Specialists, Subject Matter experts and Manufacturing Systems Integration Engineers to translate digital designs into robust, sustainable production solutions.
- Troubleshoot plant paint shop processes (PT/ED, sealing, primer, topcoat) using data analytics to identify root causes and validate corrective actions.
- Serve as a technical lead and change agent for digital process methods, including training, coaching, and influencing cross-functional teams to adopt new tools and workflows.
- Use the Tech Center Paint Lab and virtual models to develop and test robotic paths, validate application performance, and support pre-launch readiness.
- Provide clear technical direction to suppliers, integrators, and plant personnel regarding digital deliverables, simulation criteria, and acceptance requirements.
- Manage project timing, digital deliverables, and status reporting for leadership and program teams.
- Support continuous improvement of paint processes, equipment reliability, and system capability through expanded use of digital tools and standardized methods.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience specifying, commissioning, or operating paint shop equipment or controls systems, or in paint process engineering.
- Working knowledge of PT/ED, sealing, primer, and topcoat processes, vision inspection and their impact on appearance and durability.
- Hands-on experience programming or supporting automation cells and robotics (paint or sealer preferred).
- Practical experience or strong exposure to Siemens digital manufacturing tools, including:
- NX for 3D models and product/process integration.
- Teamcenter Line Designer or MPP for process planning, line balancing, and layout.
- Process Simulate for robot simulation, reach studies, and virtual validation.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose process issues and identify root causes of equipment or application failures using data and structured problem-solving.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple projects in parallel.
- Proven ability to drive change across cross-functional and plant teams, including influencing without direct authority.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical topics in a clear, concise manner.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Quality, Product Engineering, and suppliers.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial) or related technical field, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work effectively in both central engineering and plant environments, including time on the plant floor around operating equipment.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- 5+ years of experience in automotive paint manufacturing engineering or advanced manufacturing for coatings.
- Deep expertise in robotic paint and sealer applications, including bell/airless systems, atomization parameters, and film build control.
- Experience implementing digital twin or model-based manufacturing solutions in a production environment.
- Familiarity with PLM/MES integration, data standards, and governing process documentation within Siemens Teamcenter or similar environments.
- Experience leading virtual builds, virtual tryouts, or virtual commissioning for major capital projects.
- Demonstrated success in coaching and training others on digital tools and new processes.
