Description

The Role

The Weld Lab Quality Technician will support offline quality verification for welding-related operations at the Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC). This role is to support current weld lab scope that includes tensile testing, weld cross section analysis, 3D microscope evaluation, and related offline characterization for packaging and weld quality checks in the Weld Quality Lab.

This role will be responsible for executing standard test methods, preparing, and evaluating samples, documenting results accurately, writing clear test reports and summaries, to support investigation or containment activities when weld-related process issues are identified. This role may also support additional offline testing needs across BCDC as business needs evolve.

What You'll Do

  • Perform tensile testing and cross section analysis on weld-related samples in support of welding quality checks in the Weld Quality Lab.
  • Use microscope systems to evaluate weld patterns, burrs, knurl features, and other weld-related characteristics.
  • Set up, verify readiness, and operate lab equipment and test systems.
  • Confirm calibration status on testing equipment and collaborate with outside teams to perform routine calibrations.
  • Document test results, maintain sample traceability, complete data entry into applicable quality systems in order to prepare clear reports, summaries, and test records.
  • Support control plan reactions, containment actions, and nonconforming material investigations for welding failure modes.
  • Work closely with quality, process engineering, operations, and other cross-functional teams to support troubleshooting, validation of weld performance, and communication of test results in a timely manner.
  • Maintain testing records, process control paperwork, work instructions, and other required lab documentation.
  • Maintain good housekeeping, organization, and 5S discipline within the weld lab and associated work areas.
  • Follow standardized test methods, lab procedures, calibration requirements, and safe handling practices within the lab.
  • Wear required PPE and follow all lab and clean room safety protocols.
  • Support other offline quality testing responsibilities within BCDC as needed.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2 + years of experience in a manufacturing lab, quality lab, materials lab, metrology lab, or technician role with hands-on test execution responsibility.
  • Direct experience performing mechanical testing such as tensile, peel, shear, or similar destructive testing.
  • Firsthand experience with microscope-based inspection, sample preparation, or metallographic/cross section analysis.
  • Ability to follow detailed test methods, work instructions, and standard operating procedures with a high degree of discipline and repeatability.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, control plans, or inspection criteria and translate them into test execution procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail, sample identification discipline, documentation accuracy, and report writing.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to enter, organize, and review test data in standard business (Microsoft suite) or lab software.
  • Ability to work safely with laboratory equipment using required PPE.
  • Ability to follow clean room gowning, contamination control, and lab safety protocols in a controlled environment.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Associate degree or higher in a relevant field such as materials, manufacturing, quality, metallurgy, welding, or engineering technology.
  • Background in battery cell manufacturing, welding operations, or manufacturing quality in an industrial setting.
  • Experience with hands-on use of tensile testing and cross sectioning equipment.
  • Experience preparing and evaluating weld cross sections.
  • Familiarity with optical microscopy and image-based measurement systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of traceability, data collection, report generation, and data entry into plant quality systems.
  • Previous experience working in a startup, pilot line, prototype, launch, or advanced manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with GM standardized work and quality checks tied to process control plans.

Work Environment

  • Role is based at GM’s Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC) at the GM Global Technical Center.
  • Requires regular on‑site presence in the quality lab, weld lab, and production areas, with appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • May support off‑shift or weekend work during launches, trials, or when quality issues require rapid response.
