About the role:
We are building General Motors’ next-generation Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) infotainment platform, powered by Android Automotive OS.
As a Staff Software Developer, you will play a critical technical leadership role in shaping the platform foundations behind GM’s in-vehicle user experience across future vehicle programs. This role is broader than a feature-focused application position. It is centered on platform ownership across SystemUI, Android UI framework integrations, vehicle-aware platform capabilities, and the engineering patterns that allow teams to deliver safe, scalable, and high-performance infotainment experiences.
You will operate as a senior technical leader across multiple workstreams, influencing architecture, platform direction, and execution. You will work closely with Android platform engineers, SystemUI developers, framework and service owners, UX partners, and automotive domain experts to deliver production-quality software into GM vehicles.
What will you do?
- Lead the architecture, design, development, and evolution of core Android platform and SystemUI capabilities for GM’s infotainment stack
- Own technical direction across platform areas such as SystemUI, UI framework integrations, platform services, and vehicle-aware user experience behavior
- Drive scalable platform solutions that enable multiple teams and product areas rather than solving only local feature needs
- Define and enforce engineering patterns, interfaces, and best practices that improve maintainability, testability, quality, and long-term platform health
- Collaborate closely with GM’s internal design organization to translate product and UX intent into robust platform behavior and reusable technical solutions
- Integrate platform components with Android framework, Car Service APIs, Vehicle HAL, and related system signals to enable context-aware in-vehicle experiences
- Debug and resolve complex issues spanning AOSP, SystemUI, framework, middleware, and native layers
- Lead technical investigations, root-cause analysis, and cross-functional problem solving for difficult platform and production issues
- Drive Android platform dessert (Pastry) upgrades and forward-port GM platform customizations across releases
- Influence capability planning, technical roadmaps, and platform investment decisions across teams
- Improve platform performance, boot time, memory usage, reliability, and software quality on automotive hardware
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, raise the technical bar across the team, and provide leadership through design reviews, architecture reviews, and hands-on implementation
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience developing and customizing Android platform software, with deep hands-on expertise in SystemUI and/or Android UI framework internals
- Strong understanding of Android architecture, system services, framework layers, and platform-level design tradeoffs
- Significant experience with AOSP and Android Automotive OS (AAOS)
- Proven ability to lead technical direction across broad and complex problem spaces that span multiple teams or domains
- Strong experience defining software architecture, technical strategy, and reusable platform solutions
- Strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin
- Experience working with Android HMI, XML-based UI development, and modern UI technologies such as Jetpack Compose
- Experience integrating platform software with Android framework APIs, Car Service APIs, and vehicle-aware system behavior
- Experience debugging complex issues across framework, SystemUI, platform services, and native layers
- Experience improving test coverage, code quality, build reliability, and engineering standards in large-scale Android or AOSP environments
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines in large-scale Android or platform development organizations
- Familiarity with static analysis and code quality tools such as SonarQube
- Experience working in Ubuntu-based development environments with tools such as Jira, GitHub, and Figma
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across internal and external stakeholders
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience shipping Android Automotive infotainment systems in production vehicles
- Experience with Vehicle HAL, Car Property APIs, calibration-aware behaviors, and other vehicle integration layers
- Experience working on multi-display and multi-user automotive systems
- Experience maintaining or contributing to custom AOSP forks
- Experience driving Android platform upgrades, version migrations, and long-term platform maintenance
- Contributions to AOSP and/or AAOS codebases, especially in SystemUI, framework, or platform components
- Experience working with automotive OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, Google, Bosch, or similar ecosystem partners
- Experience using Google Partner Issue Tracker (Buganizer) to report, track, and resolve AOSP or AAOS issues
- Knowledge of Android security model, permissions architecture, and platform hardening considerations
- Experience practicing test-driven development and writing unit, integration, and instrumentation tests
- Experience evaluating and applying AI- or automation-assisted engineering approaches in ways that improve developer productivity and platform quality without compromising production standards
