About GM Defense

GM Defense delivers integrated vehicles, power and propulsion, autonomous systems, and connectivity solutions to global defense, security, and government markets. GM Defense combines General Motors’ proven engineering and manufacturing capabilities with the mission focus and execution speed required by defense customers.

The Role

GM Defense is seeking an Electrical Design Release Engineer to support the design, development, testing, release, and continuous improvement of electrical systems and components.

This role is responsible for translating customer and program requirements into robust, manufacturable, serviceable, and validated solutions. The Electrical DRE will collaborate with engineering, program teams, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, suppliers, and customers to align priorities and deliver results. Success requires adaptability as requirements evolve, ownership of one’s parts and timely escalation of risks.

What you’ll do

  • Responsible for electrical systems and components from requirements definition through design, validation, release, launch, and continuous improvement.
  • Interpret and help translate customer, vehicle, regulatory, and program requirements into clear engineering requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain electrical components such as harnesses, cables, networked modules, sensors, actuators, and related hardware/software interfaces.
  • Support evaluation of engineering tradeoffs involving performance, reliability, cost, mass, timing, manufacturability, and serviceability; clearly communicate recommendations and risks.
  • Participate in and support design/peer reviews, technical decisions, interface control activities, and engineering documentation, including change work orders, sourcing documentation, bills of material, design data, and release packages.
  • Support supplier technical execution, including requirements, design reviews, validation, timing, issue resolution, and corrective actions.
  • Provide hands-on support for prototype, pre-production, and production builds, including electrical integration, troubleshooting, containment, and root-cause analysis.
  • Support launch readiness by tracking deliverables, open issues, build support, and change implementation to closure.
  • Communicate technical status, issues, and risks to engineering and program teams; escalate decisions and recovery needs through the appropriate technical leadership.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in electrical systems, vehicle electrical engineering, design release, controls, harnesses, power distribution, embedded systems, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuit analysis, power/signal distribution, grounding, signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility, harness/cable protection, or system interfaces.
  • Experience interpreting requirements, schematics, wiring diagrams, interface definitions, bills of material, test results, and supplier technical documentation.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and prioritization skills, with sound judgment on assigned work.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work with general direction, and escalate risks appropriately.
  • Ability to support timely resolution of design and manufacturing issues as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes or vehicle launch experience.
  • Ability to work periodically at the Milford Proving Grounds, travel as required and legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
  • Proficiency in Capital Logic
  • Experience with EMI mitigation to meet EMC requirements.
